In Search of Safer Pacifiers: Natural Rubber Natursutten is a Find

We’ve been in the hunt for an all natural pacifier for quite some time now. Well, the hunt is over! The Natursutten Pacifier recently became available in the US and it’s exactly what we’ve been looking for. We’ve gotten to know the folks behind the Danish company and really like what we’ve seen. They are committed to providing safe alternatives with a high standard of quality.

Natursutten pacifiers are made from pure, natural rubber from the tree Hevea Brasiliensi. The pacifiers are extremely hygienic because they are molded in one piece. This means there is no joints or cracks where dirt and bacteria can accumulate. The pacifier shield is larger than conventional shields to help protect babies from squeezing the flexible material enough to get it into their mouth. It will also not leave marks on the baby’s face.

Natursutten’s Outstanding Features

  • No artificial colors
  • No chemical softeners, parabens, PVC or phthalates
  • Rubber pacifiers are naturally softer than silicone
  • The Natursutten company states that the protein that on rare occasions can provoke a latex allergy is eliminated during production
  • When comparing natural rubber to silicone, a major advantage of all natural rubber is it’s soft flexibility, which allows it to form to the baby’s mouth.

Natursutten Pacifiers are available in two shapes and several sizes for the perfect fit!  (*Note: In order to err on the side of safety, we do not recommend using Nattursuten pacifiers with children who have known latex allergies.)

By the way, there are several other BPA and Phthalate Free pacifiers:

  • Silicone Gumdrop Pacifiers
  • Gerber: Original, NUK and NUK Button Pacifiers
  • The First Years Soothies Silicone Pacifiers, Safe Comfort, Ultra Kip
  • Vice Versa Binky w/ Case
  • Playtex: Binky Most Like Mother Latex Pacifier, Binky Most Like Mother Silicone Pacifier, Binky Angled Pacifier, Ortho-Pro Pacifier
  • Evenflo: Mimi Soft Touch, Mimi Premium, Mimi Neo One-Piece. Evenflo’s line of Vizion, Fuzion and Illuzion pacifiers have been redesigned to be BPA free. Please be careful to choose only the new pacifiers labeled as BPA free to ensure they are the new, safer version (thanks to ZRecs for this great info on Evenflo).

As a bonus for our blog readers, we’re going to give away two new Natursutten pacifiers. We have a Round pacifier for 6 – 12+ months and an Orthodontic for 6+ months. The first two comments posted will receive a pacifier and shipping is on us! The first poster chooses the one they want.

UPDATE: Congrats to Jackie and Meeghan! They get to try out the new pacifiers first :) Thanks to everyone else for your comments. The pacifiers will be available in about a week at The Soft Landing.

i could not find any of the other safer brands you've mentioned above in my country... i just found out about these bpa-free products a few days ago... thank God for the internet. it bothers me that i was completely ignorant of this matter. i guess most of the people here are not also aware of these things... thanks...
  • Hi Elena,

I've spoken to the Natursutten company and confirmed that the recommendation to replace them every 5-7 weeks is just that - a recommendation. It's a lot like the toothbrush companies recommend replacing your toothbrush every 2-3 months.

We just need to be aware that this pacifier is made from a wonderfully natural, and thus easily biodegradable material. It should be monitored for gummy spots, stickiness, and tearing and replaced at that time.

Hope that helps clarify a little,

    Alicia

    Hi,
just want to mention that if you read the description for these pacifiers it says that they need to be replaced every 5-7 weeks! Given that they are already 6.50 each, plus 7 dollars shipping, that makes this product pretty unaffordable for most people. I was about to order one when i read that blurb and now i'm on the hunt for a cheap and safe alternative...
  • Hi Daphne,

Jeremiah of ZRecs has spoken directly with Avent. He was told that all Avent pacifiers currently contain BPA, so you will probably want to avoid them.

    As for BPA and Phthalates:

BPA stands for bisphenol-a; it is the toxic chemical used to produce polycarbonate plastic.

Phthalates are a chemical used to soften PVC plastic.

So in essence, you are worrying about PVC and polycarbonates when you avoid phthalates and BPA.

Please feel free to email me at info@thesoftlanding.com if you would like more explanation.

    Sincerely,

    Alicia

    Hello

I am having trouble finding a straight answer. My 10 month old twins use Avent pacifiers. Are they safe from BPA, phthalates, PVC and/or polycarbonates. In other words, are they safe? What pacifiers are the safest? I am so confused. I know why I should worry about BPA and phthalates, but do I need to worry so much about PVC and polycarbonates?

    Any info is appreciated

What about nitrosamines in the rubber and silicone pacifiers and nipples? Are they in the new Natursutten paci and what do you know about this chemical? Thanks for caring about our babies!

I just purchased the pacifiers and my 12 moth old baby loved them.
  • Andrea
I just sterilized my new pacifier in the microwave sterilizer for 10 minutes because I was following the directions on the package of the pacifier. The pacifier changed colors. Is it okay to continue to use the pacifier? By using the microwave to sterilize it, did I change the properties of the pacifier?
