Which Nuby Bottles, Sippys, Teethers and Utensils Are Really BPA Free?

UPDATED 7/21/09

We’ve worked closely with the company to confirm which items are officially BPA free. Is that Nuby cup your child is drinking from actually BPA free? Before you throw it out in a panic, let me shed some light on the subject. Nuby (a subsidiary of Luv ‘n Care) offers BPA free baby feeding gear, but their naming system can be confusing. So many BPA free items sound just like others that do contain BPA.

We’ve included pictures to help further reduce confusion. Nuby also confirmed that they do not use PVC or phthalates in ANY of their products and haven’t used those chemicals since 1998.  Way to go Nuby!

So after all the fuss, we’ve come to find that Nuby does provide some affordable alternatives in several different areas. Hopefully we’ve helped alleviate some of the confusion.

7/23/09: Read about a recent voluntary recall of Nuby’s gel-filled teethers here.

7/21/09: Nuby Natural Touch line for breastfed babies is finally available in the U.S. – at The Soft Landing first, of course!

6/10/09: Nuby has just introduced a new line of BPA-free pacifiers in their Natural Touch line!  See updates above.

1/6/09: Great news!  Nuby has redesigned some of their all-time favorite sippy cups to be BPA-free.  Read about it here and see additional BPA-free cups below.

12/19/08: We’ve re-confirmed that all Nuby are definitely PVC-free.

12/8/08: Learn more about Healthy Toys test results on the Nuby Nibbler here.

6/1/08: Some Nuby products sold internationally are different than those sold here in the U.S.  If you live outside the U.S., please check with your local manufacturer to confirm the materials used in their products.

    Please help
I noticed you do not sell the Fun Feeding Spoons with Toys and Sounds. Is there a reason?
    Is this the same product??
    Sound Bites Spoon Set
It has a different name, but it looks identical.
    Is this BPA free?

Okay, I love this site. Such a great resource. Has anyone else realized that the Nuby Nibbler still isn’t “safe.” It may be BPA free, but according to HealthyToys.org the mesh bags contain a good amount of PVC….there is so much to worry about I sometimes picture my babies not being allowed to use anything but their hands (not really, but you get the frustration level)….

  4. softlanding says:

    Hi Jennifer,

We read the test results first thing yesterday morning on the Nibbler and were surprised to say the least. We’ve already contacted Nuby to get the scoop from their corporate QA dept and will be making a formal announcement asap.

I’m honestly wondering if the test results could have more to do with PVC packaging causing cross-contamination on the surface of the toy. I wrote an article that topic for Healthy Child after HeatlhyToys.org came up with a positive test for PVC on the Sassy Feeding Pots, which are 100% PVC-free. We’ve also contacted HealthyToys.org to find out more about their testing methods and will let you know what we find out there too.

    Best,

Hi I just bought the Insulated 9 oz Printed Cup with Flip-It Straw I have noticed that they are BPA free as of 6/08 how do I know when it was produced?

  7. sara says:

hi alicia- thank you so much for posting this. I just purchased some Nuby items that are shown above as BPA-free, but did not have BPA-free on the label. The bottom of the sports sipper has the copyright symbol and then 2005. Does this mean the bottle I just purchased (Dec 2008) was created in 2005, thus not being BPA free? Or is that just when the bottle was originally created? Please let me know if you can! thank you, sara

  8. Catherine says:

i just bought a 7oz & 11oz standard bottle with the label 2005 at the bottom of the bottle. Since it is produced in 2005 & not 2008, can you confirm that it is PBA free? Thanks.

    Hi there,

Great site! I purchased a Nuby microwavable section plate today, and was wondering if you knew if it was bpa free or not. I can’t seem to find any info about this item online.

    Thanks!

  11. softlanding says:

    Hi Sue,

We use Nuby cups a lot and have never experienced that before. I think you may want to contact the store you purchased them from and see about exchanging them out.

    Alicia

  12. softlanding says:

    Hi Catherine,

If they are exactly the same bottles as seen on our list above – then yes, they are BPA-free. We’ve asked Nuby specifically about those bottles, and they have used the same “recipe” for many years, including those made in 2005.

I am trying to find anyone who has used the Nuby Natrual Touch Silicone bottles.

I have very small nipples and im looking for bottles to use with my breast milk.

PLEASE HELP! Im 8.5 months along and am running out of time.

  15. Lois Clarke says:

Love your info. Thought I would pass on some that I came across regarding sippy cups. Thermos brand now puts out a BPA free, stainless steel sippy cup and thermos. Believe it or not, found one at Big Lots store, which most of the time receives “left over” products from bigger stores. Only one in the store, price was $14.00 for both. On the lookout for more of the same. Hope this helps someone.

  16. Jeanne says:

    Hi,

I just bought Nuby 3 Stage Standard 11oz Bottles & Sassy Feeding Bowl Set with Lids at Babiesrus’ bpa free feeding section. At that time, I was convinced that those items are really bpa free, and on the receipt that the cashier gave me the items were also listed as bpa free products.

Then, when I got home, I checked again and found out that there’s no ‘bpa free’ sign on those items’ packaging. So, actually are these items bpa free or not?

Fyi, the year at the back of the Nuby bottles’ packaging says 2006, does that indicate the year when they made these bottles? If so, does Nuby already go bpa free at that time?

I’m not peaceful now until I have good explanation regarding this matter, otherwise I would just return them to that baby store.

    Thanks Softlanding :)

  17. Jeanne says:

Just info for Michele, Nuby Natural Touch items are available at Babiesrus since few weeks ago. I thought maybe she still needs this info. HTH.

  18. Jeanne says:

    Hi Alicia,

Thanks a lot for your explanation, that’s really helpful :)

Just an additional info to your great explanation, when I finally opened the packaging, on a small paper inside the bottle Nuby DOES say that the bottle is bpa free (wish Nuby would put this highly important info more “visible” for us, LOL).

Another thing that I’m still confused about is Nuby Nibbler, Spoon with hot indicator and icy bite teether keys. I had bought these items from 2 different online stores. The items came from one store have no bpa free sign on the packaging (years of production are 2005+2006), but same items came from second store do have bpa free sign (years of production 2008). Does this mean, Nuby finally puts bpa free sign on their new produced items? If so, just to make sure again, the nibblers, spoon with hot indicator and icy bite teether keys produced before 2008 are also bpa free, right?

    Thanks so much.

    Rgds,
    Jeanne

    Hello –
This is a fantastic website! Thanks so much for all the wonderful information! My daughter is ready for sippy cups, and in going through the different ones from my shower I find that I have a NUBY 11oz 3-stage non-drip standard neck bottle. I am confused because on the list is says that some are but others aren’t? Mine is much ‘pinker’ in plastic than the ones shown on your photograph, so does that mean it’s the PC plastic and not the PP? I am so confused? How can I tell?
    Thanks so much!
    Amy

      Thanks, Amy!

It’s really tough to tell which is which with some companies like Nuby. Why don’t you email us a link to your specific product online and we’ll research it for you :)

    Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I bought some Nuby pacis 2 weeks ago and the ARE BPA free.
They are the Nuby Natural Touch softflex pacifiers. i think they are fairly new, as the Natural Touch Silicone nurser is also new (and BPA free).
    Thanks!

Are these BPA free Nuby baby feeders sterlizable? Do we need to boil them before use or these are to be used as such. As recently i bought 300mL BPA free feeders …after boiling it became leaky

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to Nuby Company for the “Natural Touch 5oz or 7oz Silicone Bottle with SoftFlex Wide Neck Nipple”. My daughter is 8 months old, and i wanted to start giving her formula, but from about 30 bottles i tried, she didn't like any of them – but today – gosh, when she tried the Natural Touch bottle, it was like God sent – she loved it. Started eating right away – what a release, so thank you. Highly Recommended :)

  25. Luke'smom says:

I need replacement nipples for the two-handled 10 oz. sippy cups shown. I see a bunch on line listed as 100% silicone. I assume that means they’re BPA free. Am I right? If not, do you know of a place where I can buy replacement nipples that ARE BPA-free?

  26. softlanding says:

    Hi Ilana,

The cups typically have the year of production stamped on the bottom. If not, let me know and I’ll inquire about it directly with Nuby.

    Alicia

  27. softlanding says:

    Hi Sara,

If you purchased one of the cups that DO NOT include a note saying “BPA-free as of . . . ” you should be in great shape. We’ve confirmed with Nuby that the other cups have had the same “ingredients” for many years (definitely beyond 2005), so they have been BPA-free for some time.

    Alicia

  28. softlanding says:

    Hi Heather,

    Thanks for your compliment!

It’s really hard to know exactly which Nuby product you’re wondering about without seeing a picture. Would you see if you can find a website that sells it online and post it here – that way we can really check into it for you.

    Alicia

  29. softlanding says:

    Hi Michelle,

The Natural Touch line of products is not yet available in the U.S., so we haven’t had the opportunity to try them. They should be available in the U.S. by April or May, but that won’t be of much help to you . . .

Maybe one of our international blog readers has some input for you??

    Alicia

  30. softlanding says:

    Hi Jeanne,

That’s a great question – and one that we hear almost everyday. We recently posted a F.A.Q. on our store website answering that question that question, and here’s how we explain it to our customers:

Q: I just received my order and I’m worried because not everything is labeled as BPA, PVC and phthalate-free. Does this mean I received a toxic product by mistake?

A: No. Manufactures are not required by law to label their products with “ingredient” lists. Some products may be labeled, and if so, that manufacturer has chosen to label independent of the law.

A label would make life SO much easier! Then we wouldn’t have to spend the immense amount of time and energy we do to locate and confirm (repeatedly I might add!) that a given product is made without the use of BPA, PVC and phthalates :)

As for Nuby’s product coding system – yes, they do stamp the year of production on most of their products. The products we have listed on the above list have been BPA-free for many years according to Nuby. They were not designed to be specifically BPA-free – it was more of an accident. Please note though, that any of the products recently added to our list (meaning they were redesigned by Nuby to be BPA-free) will include a specific date for the change over.

    Hope that helps,

    Alicia

  31. softlanding says:

    Hi Jeanne,

    You’re welcome – it’s a confusing situation!

Yes, the Nuby Nibbler, Hot Safe Spoons and Icy Bite Keys have been BPA-free for several years and Nuby just began labeling as such in response to concerned parents.
