The great thing about Sassy is that their products are well-named and easier to differentiate from each other.  We will continue to add updates as they become available. Remember that these products will not be labeled as BPA and PVC free, because manufacturers are not currently required to do so. Hopefully this list will help alleviate some of the confusion in the meantime.

As a side note: Sassy does not offer any pacifiers that are BPA free. All of their pacifier shields and keepers contain BPA.

  1. That is great news! I wish the pacifiers were safer, but my children have always turned them down anyway.
If manufacturers did label them as safe, I think it would be a big selling point for them.

  2. thanks for the info! would be helpful to activate some links to products and esp the sassy homepage.

  3. Hi Holly,

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment!

We did try linking to items in our Nuby article and the links expire so quickly that it was impossible to keep up with. Sorry we can’t help you there :)

  4. Hi. What a great resource! According to my correspondence with Sassy, ALL of their products are free of pthalates. You can read their correspondence with me on my blog onelittlewordsheknew.blogspot.com Can I add a link to this article?

  5. Hi Christy,

Thanks! That’s what Sassy has told me also. The person I spoke with said they phased out phthalates a while back, which is great.

We do need to keep in mind that because a product is phthalate free, does not mean it is bisphenol-a free. Phthalates are typically (but not always ) used in items containing PVC, such as teethers and toys.

Thanks again for pointing that out to our readers. And yes – you can definitely link to the article :)

  6. How bad is it to have bpa in pacifiers? I ask because my kids will not take any pacifiers other than Avent or Mams because of the symmetrical nipple. I’ve tried all the all-silicone ones and the nuks and the playtex ones and they hate them. So I’m using Mams classic pacifiers because the shields are a bit pliable so I think maybe there is less bpa than the hard ones. I have no idea if that’s true, or even how much bpa they might get from the shields. They are against their lips, but not in their mouths… anyone have a thought about this? We’ve replaced all our sippy cups and dishes and toys that have bpa or pvc in them, so this is our only remaining “bad plastic” issue. thanks so much.

  7. I see the Teach Me Toothbrush Set, but is there a recommendation for non toxic finger infant toothbrushes for baby’s gums?

  8. @Monique:

That’s a great question! I did a quick search and found one called the Soft Finger Toothbrush by Luvable Friends. It’s listed by Amazon.com as being made from medical grade silicone and PVC free. They’re out of stock, but I found it here.

I’ll keep searching for more options and I’ll let you know what I find.

  9. Does it really matter if the shield contains bpa? I thought the leaching was a problem only if there is a hot liquid inside to ingest. Also, the soothies are scented…is there a chemical in them to make them taste like vanilla? I am wary of that. My daughter only likes the mam silicone nipple pacifiers. I have been trying other kinds. I am just wondering if I should even worry about it since the shield isn’t in her mouth, anyway.

  10. Thanks for all of this great information! Do you know whether the Sassy bumble bites teether has BPA? It looks a lot like the Buzz n bites teether, but it’s not listed. Thanks again!

  11. Hi Debbie,

Thank you for contacting us! We haven’t done our own research on the Bumble Bites teether yet. We did find some info from a reader of the ZRecs.com blog:

“I wrote Sassy and asked them about their Coolin Teethers and bumble bites buzz. Here is their response. We mainly use cloth ones, but I wanted a few plastic ones that I knew were BPA free

    From: Judith Minix jminix@sassybaby.com
    Date: February 12, 2008 1:15:17 PM EST
    Subject: Re: materials

Thank you for your email. The Bumble Bites, Buzz & Bite and Coolin Teethers are BPA-free. Be assured we only use safe non-toxic materials. The safety of the children using or playing with our products is our primary concern, and all of our products meet and exceed all government safety standards set by the (CPSC) Consumer Product Safety Commission and (ASTM) American Society For Testing & Materials. Best Regards, Judy Minix/Sassy/MAM Consumer Relations.”

It sounds like the Bumble Bites teether is also BPA free, but if you’re unsure, you may still want to contact the company yourself.

    Hope that helps,

    Alicia

  12. @Carolyn: BPA leaching has recently been shown to take place with normal, everyday use. It turns out that hot liquid may not be required to cause the already unstable BPA bond to break down and leach out.

As far as whether you really need to worry about BPA in pacifiers, it really has to be to your own discretion. I have personally chosen to avoid pacifiers containing BPA, because my kids lips are in constant contact. They also use the pacifier for a teether – chewing on the shield.

That’s a great question regarding scented Soothies. Not all Soothies are scented, but it does lend to the question of whether it’s toxic or not. We’ll delve into that and post what we find out in the near future. There are several other scented teethers that could be included in this category of research.

  13. Thank you for all of the helpful information! The one thing that I have still not been able to find is a regular Bisphenol-a, Phthaltate and PVC free drinking cup. I want one that is not a straw or a sippie cup, and my kids aren’t quite ready for a glass. Do you know of anyone that makes any? Thank you!

  14. Mollie,

We’ve been in the hunt for some time and have only come across two brands so far for older kids. The most accessible is IKEA Rainbow Cups and Utensils, as noted by Kathy at Safemama.com. The second is a line of dishware by Steady Co. They’re located in the UK, but you can find their Steady Cup at onestepahead.com.

We’ll let you know when we come across more options,

    Alicia

  15. Just to let you know I was out shopping and saw a whole new munchkin set of very similar products to sassy. the snack bowls/lids and the bowls with suction. It looks almost identical.

  16. Hi Debbie,

We just received received confirmation from Sassy that the Bumble Bites teether is free from BPA, PVC and Phthalates. We’ll be updating our list of teethers to include a lot more non-toxic options from Sassy.

  17. I just emailed sassy (thanks for the link!) because I have 5 toys (came in a set) from them and I saw that one of them was on Z Recommends list as having BPA for sure. The circle rattle. I’ll let you know what they say back to me… but it sounds like from that generic email I might not get much.

  18. HI, I’m trying to find out if the Sassy Hourglass Rattle has BPA in it, any idea? Thanks.

  19. This is the response I received from Sassy (also thanks for the link) re; the Hourglass Rattle:
“The plastic piece that has the beads in it is polycarbonate. Thanks, Judy”

  20. Help!

I have an older set of nesting snack cups that are similar to the Perfect Size Snack Cups. I bought them a couple years ago and put them away and forgot about them. Unfortunately, I didn’t put the packaging in :( I’m pretty sure they are Sassy and I know I bought them at Babies R’ Us, but I can’t find out any information about the plastic. There’s nothing listed on the cups themselves. I’m sure I should just get rid of them, but hoping for help.

There are 4 bowls (small) and they nest (I have 8 total, but I think I purchased 2 sets). The colors are red, orange, blue and purple (opaque) and all of the lids are green. 3 of the 4 lids are the snack lid (hinge in the middle) and the smallest is not. All of the lids have relief shapes on them: square, circle and rectangle. The bowls have relief designs–two have small cat faces on the side, the other two have dogs on the side.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  21. I just bought the feeding plate set for my son… but on the bottom of each plate is a set of numbers, in the middle is an “07″ – which I would guess means this is a #7 plastic – doesn’t that contain BPA? I looked at the bottom of the feeding bowl set also from Sassy and those were labeled “05″ – so BPA free. The plastics in the two different sets look different too. The plates are opaque whereas the bowls are translucent (which is how the plates in your photo here look, too – mine look different). Did they perhaps change over the plastics used in the plates at some point? I bought mine at Babies R Us just this weekend.

    Thanks for your help.

  22. Rose,

The numbers you are looking at are the manufacturers code, not the recycling code. Many times it represents the year they are made or the design updated by the company.

The recycling numbers are always found within the three chasing arrows and they won’t have a zero before them.

Hopefully that helps clear it up a little,

    Alicia

  23. Does it matter which year the Sassy products were produced? I just bought Sassy products today from Babies R Us and the bottoms of the products say 1999 (spoons), 2000 (the bowls and more spoons). Were they bpa-free back then?
    Thanks!

  24. I have a feeding bowl I believe is from Sassy. Its green and has a rubber thumb grip on it. It has a lid that has a steam hole in it. It came with a spoon as well. I am wondering if this is BPA free.

    Thanks

  25. Carolyn,

Sassy makes so many products that it’s hard to know by with a worded description. Why don’t you email me a picture of the bowl/spoon at info@thesoftlanding.com and I’ll see what I can find out for you.

    Alicia

  26. I’ve contacted Sassy regarding their Sassy Lively Links product to see if it contains BPA, PVC, or Phthaltate. My daughter absolutely loves these links, which she uses as a teething toy. Have you heard anything about this particular product? I know many friends of mine have babies that love these links…

  27. Does anyone have information on the Sassy Teething Wing Butterfly and/or Dragonfly? I’ve seen a few sites claim they are PVC/phthalate free but nothing on the BPA status. Thank you in advance.

  28. Chris,

We’ve received more info on the Sassy product line, so we’ll be updating our list soon :)

  29. An answer from MAM on exactly which pacifiers are BPA, phthalate & pvc free.

Hello and thanks for taking the time to email us with your questions
    and
concerns. The MAM Nanno, Soft Rim, and Ulti pacifiers are BPA and free.
The MAM classic, and Air, and mini mam contain polycarbonate in the
shield and knob. The nipples are either silicone or latex which is BPA
free. The trends, diamond, crystal are also BPA free as they are the
Ulti pacifiers. Which means they have a rounded shield instead of a
butterfly shaped one. If I can be of further assistance please let me
    know. Thanks!

    Thank you,

  30. It would be nice to actually SEE this (Bisphenol-a, Phthaltate &PVC free) listed on the product packaging! Will this be done in the near future? It would greatly take some of the guess work out of making a purchase.

I have often wanted to make a purchase be it a toy, bowl, utensil or the like & have found myself putting it back (or telling my husband to do so) so that I may go home & “look up” the product first. There goes lost “impulse” purchases.

  31. Just an FYI… although Sassy has been cooperative in answering questions, getting their bottles and pacifiers BPA, phthalate and PVC-free, I recently found another site (healthytoys.org) that found an extremely high concentration of lead in Sassy’s “My Little Sunshine” mirror…AND SASSY IS STILL SELLING IT ON ITS WEBSITE!! With NO MENTION of the dangerous amount of lead! And this is a mirror FOR A BABY TO TEETHE ON!
    Here is the link: http://www.healthytoys.org/product.details.php?getrecno=152

  32. Hey,
I was on the Sassy website today, and the picture we have posted here for the Buzz n Bites teether I think is actually the Bumble Bites teether- the Buzz is slightly different. Is the Bumble BPA free and all also? I can find it- Not the Buzz n Bites! thanks!

  33. Hi Megan,

That’s a great question! We actually posted a new expanded list on Squidoo that does include the Bumble Bites teether.

I appreciate you pointing out the we hadn’t updated this post with the new link. We added it today :)

  34. I bought an alphabet puzzle-mat for my son, which unfortunately reeks of PVC… We all know that dreaded smell… Does anyone know of a PVC-free puzzle-mat???

  35. I’m looking for a safe teether for my son but all the sassy products do not say is the are BPA free or PVC free.
Don’t need to put that on the the back of the package.
If I call sassy the probably will tell me that ALL their products are safe but the could be lying about. please help.

  36. From Sassy on 09/15/08: The material of the Stacking Sensations is ABS and TPE. Be assured we only use safe non-toxic materials.

  37. [...] can see The Soft Landing’s updated BPA-free Sassy Lists here and [...]

  38. Hi Alicia,
I purchased a set of bowls by Sassy from Babies R Us about 9 months ago when I saw it listed on your site as BPA free. However, I no longer see it listed or a picture of them on the Sassy BPA free page. I know you recently updated the Sassy info. so I’m concerned now that I’m using ones that really do have BPA in them.
The bowls came in a pack of three different sizes and had a few suction cups to put on the bottom. The bowls come in orange, magenta, and green. Do you know if they are still BPA free?

Thanks for your help, and I appreciate all the work you do to keep our kids healthy.

  39. Hi Gloria,

If I’m understanding your description correctly, you’re talking about the Sassy Feeding Bowl Set. If so, it is still included in the list above. You’ll find it below the On the Go Feeding Set and above the Insulated Feeding Pots.

    Hope that helps,

    Alicia

  40. Thanks for your response, Alicia.

The bowls I have are the same size as those above, but they are different colors. The bowls above seem to have plastic that is more see through, mine are more of a solid plastic. Does that sound familiar or make sense? Sassy may have updated the look since I bought them, but I just want to make sure mine are still okay and have no BPA. Thanks.

  41. since I was still confused I wrote to sassy for additional info regarding which paci’s my daughter had been using – the answer was helpful, but I was disappointed by the not so good news –
meanwhile I bought Born Free pacifiers at Baby’s R Us – not made in China, and BPA, Phthalate, PVC and latex free.

  42. I received a Sassy 6 piece Gift Set (containing Lively Links, Gummy Guppy Teether, Bird Wrist Rattle, Bee Wrist Rattle, Flipper Gripper Rattle, & Coolin’ Droolin’ Teether), the Hello Baby Phone, and the Circle Rattle for my baby.

Before registering for these items, I found info. on a few different websites indicating that the toys are BPA free. Since then, I have been finding conflicting info. on other websites. I contacted Sassy three times for clarification, but have received no responses. And on the Bed, Bath, and Beyond website, 2 of the toys (Lively Links & Circle Rattle) are listed as BPA free.

I appreciate any current information that you may have regarding the BPA in all of the above items.

Also, I noticed that the Gummy Guppy is listed as BPA free on your site. Does it matter if the one that I have is a different color from the one pictured?

Thank you for all your help!!!! I really wish all packaging provided such info.

  43. Today, I spoke to Laura at Sassy. She researched each toy & told me that the toys that I’ve listed above are BPA free. She also let me know that all Sassy toys (except the color changing spoons) are BPA free. Just FYI, let me know if you have different information. :) Also, I’ve been looking at Sassy products on the HealthyToys.org website.

  44. Today, I also asked Laura Heslinga at Sassy how long the toys have been BPA free and she told me since the end of 2006. The BPA was located in clear plastic where the beads are (like on the Circle Rattle).

Several rattles (Circle Rattle, Hello Baby Phone, Gummy Guppy…) have a circle on it with a number inside. If the number is 04 or more, the toy is ok & BPA free.

    I hope this info. helps!
