Fantastic Nature Moms Sequel: BPA Sippy Cup Review II

Tiffany of Nature Moms has done it again! One of the most frequent phone calls we receive is about which BPA free sippy cups work the best. Tiffany’s insight will certainly help you choose the best cup for your kiddos.

You’ll find reviews of a wide range of cups - from trainers to straw bottles, and inexpensive to top of the line:

  • Fluid by Boon
  • Safe Sippy by KidBasix
  • Sport Sipper by Nuby
  • 10oz Sippy with Handles by Nuby
  • 9oz Training Cup by Thinkbaby
  • FUNtainer by Thermos

I’m impressed with the effort Tiffany put into each review, as well as with her description of why and how she rates them. Read the full review here.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. You can win a Safe Sippy from the Nature Moms Blog, too! Head over and leave a comment to enter by Sunday, Jan. 27th.

By the way, I would love to hear which BPA free sippy cups you like the best :)

  • Thanks for the plug! And for providing 3 of the cups as I bought them from you. You have a very awesome niche store. :)
  • Hands down the Foogo. I was positive he wouldn't like it, with the valve, but he loves it, and even despite its heft, my son still picks it up and drinks from it on his own, which in this house is huge, because Mama should do everything for him. He hated the Boon. The mouth piece was just too awkward for him, and the rest he shakes so that he can flood my family room.
  • Thanks Tiffany! You have a very awesome blog :)
  • Hi Statia,

Thanks for sharing your favorite sippy with us. I always look forward to hearing your no-nonsense thoughts on stuff :)

    Keep it coming!
  • We've been really happy with our Sigg bottles, especially after I finally bought a Sigg bottle cleaner (making it MUCH easier to clean them!). Both my boys, ages 4 and 2, love their bottles and have been using them since they were under 1 year old.

The "Klean Kanteen" company has very good cups.

    Thanks very much.....Cindi
  • Gretchen
Thanks for the info. Very helpful!
  • Thanks for all the safe sippy info! We have a Kleen Kanteen and love it, but I'd like to order something a little lighter for my toddler to carry. The Kleen Kanteen can get a little cold with fresh, cool water in it, and it is quite heavy sometimes. These are just minor inconveniences, though. We love our Kleen Kanteen, and it will be perfect for our little one to hold herself when she gets older.
  • I have been wanting to try the Fluid, I love Boon products, and the Safe Sippy. Right now I just have some cheapy things from Walmart. We are almost off the bottle and fully to a cup, so we are in the market for a cup.
  • We are Nuby fans!!
  • tina cmarko
thanks for all of the helpful info!!! we own 2 kleen kanteen's and my daughters love them and they don't spill and are great (I also love my BiG mama one!). We just purchased two foogo thermos straw sport bottles... for our 2 and 3 year old daughters and they love the snap top! Very fun,... just not good for the living room couch, they are not sippys and do leak!! thanks for all of your helpful info oon keeping our daughters safe! t
(what works for us is... cleaning wise: I just keep a bowl of hot soapy water in the sink and leave the small parts in it until I get to cleaning them!!)
  • Monique
We have a Kleen Kanteen and like it.
  • Thanks for the info! My kiddo is a month or two away from trying a sippy, but this will help me know which ones to have on hand to try!

Thank you so much for taking the time with this thoughtful review! We really appreciate it!
  • We're Nuby fans here -- mostly because they are reasonably priced and available at Walmart. I won't be too upset if something should happen to one of them (lost, broken, etc).

But my husband was really upset to hear that our Nalgene Sippys are bad so I think we might get a few Kleen Kanteen's so we can hook them to our camping gear! Woo hoo!

Thanks for the link to Tiffany's post!
  • My daughter loves Nubby. Thanks!
  • This reminds me of a very thorough, more research-based report on BPA in bottles at Z Recommends (Nov. 2007) (http://zrecs.blogspot.com/2007/11/z-report-bisp...)

Except his research and direct communications showed the NUBY company entirely suspect in their commitment to BPA-free. Much of what NUBY has on the shelves is NOT BPA free by any stretch of the imagination (despite their recent PR reenvisioning).
  • Hi Adrienne,

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on this very heated subject!

I've been looking for a chance to share my personal thoughts on this very topic:

ZRecs is well-known for their fantastic research into the world of BPA in bottles and sippy cups. They also present their findings with another twist that rightly asks whether a given company is committed to providing non-toxic options for our children. We need a leader to carry the torch and effect change, so my hat is off to ZRecs for accepting that responsibility.

I also believe that Nature Moms has simply provided an answer to a question many parents are asking, "Which BPA free Nuby sippy cups will work for my child?"

I don't think the point of Tiffany's review was to give kudos to the Nuby company, or to say she's fine with the fact that they have a low commitment to providing BPA free options for us. It's no mystery that Nuby along with many, many other manufacturers ended up with BPA free products completely by accident.

The truth is that we're all reeling from the realization that we've been in the dark for a long time, and now we need help finding our way through the maze of toxic plastic bottles and cups.

    Sincerely,

    Alicia
  • NUBY cups are tough. About the time Zrec's report came out- I went through the stock at my local Babies R Us and Wal-Mart. Their old BPA cups look just like their new BPA-free cups. There is no distinguishing mark on their bottles as the materials (like plastic symbols) and there is no demarcation of date of manufacture. Simply put- if you pull three identical looking cups out of the same bin at Wal-Mart they may not all be BPA free. I found sport sippy bottles that were obviously (by their paper packaging) manufactured in 2005- long before NUBY showed any BPA concerns.

And if you call their representatives to find out if your existing product has BPA- they will tell you only what their current manufacturing standard is and not mention that there is no way to distinguish the old BPA cups from the new BPA free ones. They seem to be selling reassurance more than accuracy.
  • We're Foogo-ers in this house but we are equal opportunity sippers and spend time with the BornFree, the Boon and the Sigg as well. We haven't tried the thinkbaby yet but they look like a contender!
  • We use the bornfree but it's leaky - we'd love to try another alternative!
  • Megan
I'd like to know which sippy cups with straws are bpa free...my daughter likes to sip from a straw best, and I like it cause I don't have to worry about her drinking air, she doesn't have to tip it up!
  • Hi Megan,

I can give you a quick list of the BPA free straw cups I'm aware of:

Foogo straw bottle (my personal favorite)
FUNtainer straw bottle (for slightly older kids)
Nuby 12 oz No-spill Mega Sipper With Fat Flip-It Straw
Nuby 14 oz Tinted Flip-It Leak-proof Straw Cup
Gerber 7oz Easy Grip 2-Handled Soft Straw Cup
    Evenflo FunSip Straw Cup

    Hope that helps,

    Alicia

  • Hi Adrienne,

Your point is well taken and should be heeded by all of us. Nuby is by far the most confusing in their presentation, packaging and naming of products.

As I've continued researching the world of Bisphenol-a, I now understand that you can learn what a polycarbonate bottle or sippy cup generally looks like. They have a shiny, clear, firm appearance and feel. Where on the other hand, polypropylene bottles and sippys (which is the plastic typically used for cheaper products like Nuby, Gerber, Evenflo, etc.) are cloudy and flexible and will almost always have a tinge of color added because of its cloudy nature. By learning this distinction, we can make a decision not to use products that even look like polycarbonate.

For now, I know in speaking with my Nuby contact that the list I was given is current as of January 2008. We, being The Soft Landing Team, realize that manufacturers can change their production materials as they see fit. So we're making it our goal to check in with the more questionable companies quarterly to confirm again that each list is still correct.

I truly appreciate your willingness to discuss this important topic. You are making a difference in the health of your children by being aware of and avoiding known environmental toxins.

    Sincerely,

    Alicia

We were not impressed with the Think Baby sippy cup. Our 9 month old broke it after only about a week of daily use. First the plastic prongs which hold the handle in place broke off one by one when she dropped it and then the bottom of the bottle cracked open.
  • Hi Nicole,

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your Think Baby cup. The company is really great about replacing defective products, so be sure to contact the company you purchased it from and let them know.

This is great information to have. However, my daughter seems to have trouble drinking out of sippy cups and prefers drinking out of a small plastic cup. I have no idea if what she's been using is safe, and I'd like to replace it with something I'm sure about. Do you have any suggestions for small plastic drinking cups for babies? I suppose a metal cup would work too---anything that is non-breakable. If there isn't anything out there, could you let me know if any of Soft Landing's sippy cups might work for her without the lids? Obviously they would need to be smooth around the top edge, which would mean that the lid would snap on rather than screw on. Thanks for your help!
  • @Lisa: I'm not sure any of our cups at The Soft Landing would work very well without the lids. I have run across a cup that looks like a great design called the Steady Cup. You can find it at One Step Ahead.

I've also spoken to the company (Steady Co.) and I was very impressed with their knowledge of toxic plastics and commitment to providing safer alternatives for children.
