Natural Rubber Sophie and Chan Pie Gnon Teethers are a Hit with Babies

I recently came across a great review written by Kelly of Kid Feed highlighting Sophie the Giraffe. She made the teether sound so wonderful that I set out to investigate right away.

Sophie is a unique safer teether toy made from natural rubber and food-based paint. The teether is handmade in France and has been extremely popular their for over 40 years. Vulli, the company that produces Sophie has also introduced a new line of natural rubber teethers in three adorable mushroom-shaped characters called Chan Pie Gnon.

Here’s what Kid Feed thinks about these natural rubber wonders:

This time around with a new baby I decided to ditch the junky plastic baby toys I had collected with my other two. All the news headlines about lead in toys made me more aware of what my children were playing with and putting in their mouths. Around this same time I found out about BPA in plastics. These toxins made me want to find more natural toys for my children. I’m becoming more and more of a believer in the phrase “You get what you pay for.” It seems to be true about many things, including toys. I like the idea of getting a few high quality toys for my children that will last and also be safe for their health.

She is soft and easy for tiny hands to grasp. She has interesting spots and dark black eyes that easily grab a baby’s attention. My 7 week old gets a huge smile on her face when I put Sophie in her line of vision. Every review I’ve read about this toy has been overflowing with praise. People say their babies can’t get enough of Sophie. She is an excellent teething toy, with several great places for a baby to suck or chew – the ears, the horns, the snout, and the legs. My daughter isn’t quite ready to start grabbing for toys yet, but if we place Sophie in her hand she gets a greedy look in her eye, and with a slight smile she tries to suck on an ear, or whatever part she can find. Sophie also makes a cute squeak when she is squeezed. I envision this toy being a prized possession by my daughter in months to come.

I initially balked at Sophie’s price, and decided to wait on purchasing one. But then last week we were at Disneyland and I saw a Sophie in a woman’s diaper bag. I told her I’d read about it on-line, and immediately the woman began raving about it. She said it was the absolute best toy and that her daughter adores it. Their Sophie goes everywhere with them. After hearing that and seeing a Sophie in person, I was sold.

As a side note (albeit, an important one):

I recently spoke with a Mom who was looking for a high quality teether to take along on a long flight to keep her baby happy. She told me how a friend of hers had purchased several different teethers for the same purpose and they were promptly confiscated by airport security. Needless to say she was frantically searching for a teether that wasn’t filled with water or gel. The natural rubber teethers fill this need perfectly!

Meet one of our heavenly Homegrown Testers! This is my six month old nephew with his Chan Pie Gnon. He is seriously in love with it! It’s mushroom-shaped head is perfect for teething and grasping easily. He’s even figured out how to make it squeak – what a smart boy! I’ve never seen him so enthralled with anything like this before.

  • Hi Jennifer,

Yes, natural rubber still contains the latex protein which is the biggest cause of allergic reactions. If your child has a known latex allergy, you'll want avoid all latex rubber products.

    Best,

    Hi.

I stumbled across your site after searching for info on Sophie - I was shopping at my local natural toy store for a safe teether today and they had Sophie. I did not purchase because I was worried about latex allergies with a natural rubber product. Is this a concern?

    Thanks,
    Jennifer
  • Hi Chloe,

You prompted us to check on the new Sophie bath toy when you mentioned a #3 on the package. We have been able to confirm with Vulli that the new bath toys is made with PVC, and has been listed incorrectly by several other websites as being made from Natural Rubber.

    Thanks for pointing it out!

BEWARE of the new Sophie Bath toy! It is very cute (comes with floater ring) and I thought it would be a great alternative... but guess what! The code on the back of the package is # 3! Even if that's just the package, isn't it just DISGUSTING that a company known for being so safe would package their toys in highly toxic plastic? UGH! Returning this item today...
  • Hi:

Great info, thanks! Why would you mind if the teether is filled with water or non-toxic gel? Also, I've always wondered what the non-toxic gel is actually made from--do you know? I also wonder why water wouldn't just suffice?

    Thanks, Laurie

    SOOO cute!!!! I love Sophie!!
  • My little man is done with most of his teething so I never got a chance to test these out, but I think I'll send one to my 6 month old niece to chew on. They are just so cute!
  • Wow! I never even thought about teethers on the airplaines! I think they are within the weight limit for liquids.
I love the Sophie, it is so cute!
  • Thanks for the mention! Sophie sure is great, and I'm glad the word is getting out!
