We’ve Been Playing with Our Bottles Again . . .

NEWLY UPDATED 10/21/08

The Girls and I had a wild itch to take every single bottle apart and see which nipples, venting systems, etc. would fit other brands of bottles. We came away from our mishmash of bottle parts with several interesting tidbits. This summary is based on bottles we stock in our store.

The Bottle Exchange

  • The following wide neck nipples fit each other’s bottles: Born Free, Green to Grow, Sassy MAM UltiVent , Think Baby, Momo Plastic Wide Neck and Nuby Wide Neck.
  • Think Baby nipples will only work with Born Free bottles when the Born Free air vent is removed, because Think Baby’s vent is a little tube on the bottom of the nipple that goes straight down into the bottle.
  • We’ve heard from many relieved parents that the Think Baby vented nipple is amazing with the Sassy MAM vented bottle for extremely gassy babies.
  • The following regular neck nipples fit all each other’s bottles: Dr. Brown’s, Evenflo (includes Siliskin), Green to Grow, Momo Glass, Nuby Regular Neck Bottles and Weego.
  • It turns out that the Dr. Brown’s venting system fits most regular neck bottles, including Weego, Green to Grow, Nuby, Momo Glass and Evenflo. It does require the use of a Dr. Brown’s collar (they are taller than a normal collar). The reservoir tube needs to be trimmed to fit the bottle (with the exception of Weego).
  • We had a reader try a wide neck Green to Grow bottle with the wide neck Dr. Brown’s venting system. It didn’t fit, not even with the Dr. Brown’s collar (the collar wouldn’t tighten all the way).
  • Mother’s Milkmate storage bottles are the same size as Medela, which means they’ll fit Medela breast pumps. We also found that Dr. Brown’s (without the vent inserted), Evenflo (includes Siliskin), Green to Grow (reg. neck) and Weego fit the Mother’s Milkmate bottle ring, so they too will fit a Medela breast pump. We also confirmed with Green to Grow that their bottles fit Lansinoh breast pumps, which means all of these bottles will also work with Lansinoh – Yeeaahh!
  • It’s been reported by several of our readers that none of our bottles will work with Avent Isis breast pump.  Read some very helpful input from parents here.
  • Evenflo’s Comfort Select nipple is quite a neat little invention. It fits almost any regular neck bottle and serves like a wide neck nipple. Please note when using the Comfort Select nipple with the Evenflo bottles, the cap will not fit over the nipple – so traveling with it in the diaper bag may not work out so well.
  • Think Baby and Born Free’s training spouts work with all of our wide neck bottles. This is a great way to transition baby from bottle to sippy cup. Think Baby now offers a sippy conversion kit.
  • It turns out the you can use of all of our wide neck nipples with Klean Kanteen sippy! And thanks to Evelyn’s tip, we can use the Born Free and Think Baby spouts instead of the Avent sippy spouts too! You’ll need to use the sippy adapter to make this work.
  • Think Baby and Born Free handles and sippy spouts fit the Green to Grow wide neck bottles, making a great little transition cup.
  • Playtex Drop-ins NaturaLatch nipple does NOT work with any other bottle we’ve tried so far.
  • AND THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION IS: Does the famous Avent nipple work with any of our BPA free bottles? The basic answer is no, not really YES!! The nipple fits all of our wide neck bottles, but it leaks from under the bottle ring/collar.   The only bottle the Avent nipple officially works with is the Nuby wide neck bottle with handles.  You’ll need to use an Avent collar with the nipple and Nuby bottle to make it work correctly.  We attribute the leaking issue with other bottles to the Avent venting system causing the nipple to stand higher, which in turn prevents the ring/collar from tightening down completely.  UPDATE 10/21/08: The new BPA free Avent bottles are now available at The Soft Landing!  No more trying to make those nipples work with another bottle :)

We would really love to hear what you’ve learned from playing with your bottles. Go ahead – post your bottle-weilding experience!

  1. we use & really like the bornfree… (the vent system rocks our lil guy barely spits up) and havent tried others… i will comment that the nipple does a “collapse” thing after about a months worth of regular usage (we rotate about 6/7 bottles) and he’s 3 months now… so we’ve moved to the next nipple… but apparently just in time…. i guess w/normal usage I should expect the nipple to wear out?

  2. I bought the BornFree set and really loved it, but the price was a little too high for me. So I bought a couple of the Nuby bottles, but my baby hated the nipple. So I used the BornFree nipple w/ the Nuby bottles and it fit perfectly – no leaks. So I just bought extra BornFree nipples for my Nuby bottles.

  3. The Dr. Brown’s venting system for its wide neck bottles fits the Born Free’s. I personally love this combination, though it can get pricey buying the Born Free bottles then the component parts of the Dr. Brown’s, but I don’t mind too much…

  4. I took a caulk gun “spout cutter” and trimmed the vent straws on my Dr. Brown’s in one snap. They are now short enough to fit in Gerber Clear View, Fashion Tints and Evenflo (glass and plastic). I have a post about it here: http://labornegotiations.typepad.com/labor_negotiations/2007/08/so-long-arch-ne.html

I couldn’t stomach spending any more $$ on another bottle system. $1 a bottle was doable.

  5. We use Born Free bottles with Dr Brown’s wide nipples. The price savings is huge!

  6. I was stressing about what to do about my Avent nipples once I heard about the BPA in the bottles. We switched the bottles out for the base of the Avent sippy cups, which are bpa free, and voila. No need to switch the baby to a new nipple and no need to invest in a new bottle system this late in the game.

Though I’m so mad at Avent for the bpa that I promise those sippy cups will be the last thing I buy from them… grrr… :-)

  7. I found out about the BPA issue when my baby was about 7 months old. She was still nursing well and switching easily from bottle to breast, so I didn’t want to switch from the Avent system. I did the same thing Susan did and used the Avent sippy cup bases with my regular avent collars and nipples. I also used the avent VIA system, but my caregivers didn’t like those as well and would often pour the breastmilk into the sippy cup base and use it instead.

Avent sippy cup bases and VIA milk storage containters with converter ring should work with the Avent breast pumps.

Interestingly, as soon as we weaned from the bottle, my daughter decided she only wanted sippy cups with straws and so now the Avent sippy cups I bought are not being used.

  8. I was wondering if anyone knew whether the first year soothie nipples could be exchanged with any of the BPA free bottles. The bottles are “very wide” mouth and since mt daughter is predominantly breastfed, this nipple seems to mimic it the best. I do not want switch now. Thanks. :)

  9. Has anyone used the gerber gentle flow bottles? I read they are BPA free are similar in design to the avent bottles and will take the avent nipples. They are also very inexpensive. Also has anyone tried using them with the avent breast pump?

  10. Any ideas which other BPA free wide neck bottles will fit the Dr. Browns wide-neck vent system besides Born Free. Think Baby doesn’t work with the Dr. Brown’s collar the collar is too tall and the threading on the Think Baby bottle is too shallow. Anyone know about the Green to Grow wide neck bottles or preferably other more cost effective options. I have a small fortune invested in the Dr. Brown’s 8 oz. wide neck bottles (we have about 20-30 of them) and my twins need the vent system and Dr. Browns vent system is by far the best I have found. I did not like the Born Free vent system at all….way too difficult and time consuming to wash and to put back together. I didn’t want to invest another small fortune in Born Free bottles and then throw out their vent system. Any help would be deeply appreciated.

  12. Does anyone know if the mothers milkmate storage bottles will fit an Ameda breast pump? Which freezer bags are safe to use?

  13. I just bought the kleen kanteen sippy, but didn’t like the avent nipple that came with it (is it BPA free by the way?) so I took the sippy nipple from my born free sippy and voila, it worked! Kind of great! Now I get to have a stainless bottle that won’t break w/a nipple that my baby likes and that won’t leak!

  14. Hi Evelyn,

What an excellent find! I can’t believe we didn’t think of that!! We love the Born Free spouts because they’re so flexible.

And yes, the Avent spouts are BPA free. Thanks for the tip – we’ll add it to our article :)

  15. So, after cutting the Dr. Brown’s reservoir tube to make it fit the Gerber Clear View bottles, won’t that cause even more leaching? Because i thought scratching the plastic causes it to leach…so wouldn’t cutting it as well? I’m just worried, because I just trimmed all of mine, but now i’m worried that the chemicals from the open cut will get into the water…

  16. Hi Jade,

That’s a good thought, but you don’t have to worry about the Dr. Brown’s venting system leaching, because they’re made from polypropylene, which doesn’t have any BPA in it.

  17. Has anyone tried mating the Mam Ultivent nipples with the Playtex Nurser system? I have a friend that really wants an orthodontic silicone nipple to use with her nurser system for her picky babe and the only wide mouth orthodontic nipples I know of are the Mam and the Nuk and I know the Nuk doesn’t fit because I tried.

  18. Do the Avent nipples fit in any of the Nuby bottles? My son is 7 months old and has been using the Avent nipples his whole life. He has Down syndrome, so feeding has been a bit of an issue. I really, really don’t want to switch nipples since these work great for us, but no longer want to use the Avent bottles. I also don’t want to break the bank buying Born Free bottles or anything else that pricey since he’s only going to use them for a few more months.

  19. Do the Avent sippy cups come in a bigger size than 4oz? I recently bought the ThinkBaby bottles and my 8 month old is not taking to the nipples at all. I tried both the fast flow and the slow flow. She sputters and chokes on them. I tried stuffing the Avent nipple into it and it leaks like crazy, but she wouldn’t take it either because I guess she has a negative association with the bottle now. Does anyone have any advice on what to do? She was also using a Nuby sippy (for water only) but after checking on this website I found out it was not BPA free so I switched her to a Nuby that was BPA free. She is not taking to that either! I’m not sure what to do, my husband says to keep trying but she cries and gets upset, and I don’t know if I should be forcing her (don’t want to create negative associations).

  20. Jennifer, the Avent Magic Cup sippy comes in 9 oz size as well. I’ve just switched all the bases while using the same nipples and my 10 month old daughter hasn’t even noticed. Saved me a ton of money!

  23. I’m so confused….My daughter drinks from Avent bottles and uses the pacifiers. Can I just switch the bottles to another brand or will the nipples still be affected?

Also, is it correct that the Avent sippy cups are okay?
And does anyone know of a pacifier that is BPA free but similar to the Avent pacifier?

  24. I too have the entire Avent bottle system, and have invested lots of $$$. Does anyone know if i can use the wide neck nipples on a BPA free bottle? Wasn’t sure if the comparison Soft Landing did included Avent nipples. thanks!

  25. Hi Confused,

It’s the bottles that contain BPA, so you don’t need to worry about using silicone Avent nipples.

We haven’t researched Avent sippy cups, but Safemama.com list the following as BPA free options: Avent Magic Cups, Super Sport Cups.

    Alicia

  26. Hi –

After all my research, I think I want to use the Born Free glass bottles. But do they work with the Medela Harmony breast pump?

    Thanks.

    Anne

  27. I’m curious about nipples that will fit to Avent’s magic cups? Since I threw away all bottles that have bpa, I only have those magic cups left thats only are bpa free.. The nearest store is Walmart, they don’t have Avent products. I got Avent cups a couple of months ago when I was in a big city. Let me know? Thanks..

  28. hello i would like to know if anybody knows if i can switch the nipples of the green to grow bottles… (only the nipples not the rings too) Thanks

  29. Hi, does anyone know which nipples would work with the Think Baby bottles. The flow of their “slow flow” nipples are super fast. My poor baby ends up inhaling the formula and stops breathing (luckily I have my first aid certificate). The Nuby nipples fit, but because they are the vari-flow type, you have to suck really hard to get anything out and my baby ends up thinking it’s a pacifier and goes to sleep instead while it’s in her mouth. I know that Avent and Playtex doesn’t work. I really don’t want to buy a bunch of nipples to see which would work. Thanks!!!

  30. Hi, I read a comment by Rachel, it was:

“Has anyone tried mating the Mam Ultivent nipples with the Playtex Nurser system? I have a friend that really wants an orthodontic silicone nipple to use with her nurser system for her picky babe and the only wide mouth orthodontic nipples I know of are the Mam and the Nuk and I know the Nuk doesn’t fit because I tried.”

Well I have the Nuk bottles and am thinking of switching to Mam Ultivent because of BPA…are their nipples similar to eachother? I dunno whether my daughter would switch or not…she usually isnt very picky…but u never know! are both nipples the same shape, like orthodontic, or is the MAM nipple like an Avent or Gerber Gentle Flow nipple?

Also, are pacifiers also included in this BPA free thing? I thought it only mattered when the plastic was heated???

  31. Oh by the way, what about a Nuk First Choice nipple on a MAM Ultivent? It said on their website that if another nipple would be used the system wouldnt work properly…but just a question, does the Nuk nipple fit a MAM Ultivent bottle?…theyre both wide mouthed…

  32. Has anyone had any luck finding a nipple that works with the Nuby standard-neck bottles. My 6 mo. old can’t get anything out of the variable flow nipples that they come with. I’ve tried a couple of other nipple brands, but they don’t vent and he ends up spitting everything up. I saw the post above about the Born Free nipples working in Nuby bottles, but as far as I can tell the BF only come in wide-neck?

  33. Does anybody know where I ca find bottle covers for my Born Free Bottles. They are sooo expensive on their website with the shipping starting at about 27 bucks (Rediculous!) Please reply soon! Thanks

  34. Penny,

Think Baby just released their new slower flow cross cut nipples. You can find them at our store here.

    Alicia

  35. Hi,

Does anyone know if the Avent ISIS breast pump is BPA free? Thanks.

  36. I’m sure a lot of parents have avent nipples. Does anyone know if Softlanding has tried these nipples with other bottles? I have one Gerber Gentle Flow bottle that takes these nipples. Unfortunately, all stores no longer have them on their shelves where I live. They are made of polyproylene so I’m not sure why they aren’t being sold. This could save people a lot of time and money knowing Gerber and Avent are interchangeable.

  37. Trish,

We haven’t tried the Avent nipples with any of our bottles, although it sound like we need to go buy some and see what they’ll fit. We did just hear from a reader that the Avent nipples don’t seem to fit the wide neck bottles we carry like Think Baby, Green to Grow and Born Free. We still need to try them ourselves to verify.

    Alicia

  38. Thanks so much for such a quick reply! I’ve been in contact with Wal-mart, ToysRus, Zellers, etc… every store is telling us that Gerber Gentle flow has been taken off of the shelves because they are made from BPA. How frustrating when Gerber says they are made from polypropylene! So who is telling the truth? Anyways, I’m still looking for that perfect bottle while my baby is drinking from an Avent bottle. I’m no longer dishwashing them or warming them.

  39. Who said gerber gentle flows are bpa bottles? that is not what the gerber co. told me…you can tell they are not made with bpa, they have a slight blue tint to them and they are a softer type plastic than the avents.

  40. Danielle,

ZRecs has the Gerber Gentle Flow bottles listed as BPA free, so it sounds like you’re right.

    Alicia

  41. Hi everyone!

I have written above, about my question whether MAM Ultivent nipples are similar to Nuk First Choice nipples, and whether you can fit eachother’s nipples together.

Well, here is my answer, as I went and bought the MAM Ultivent. I tried putting the NUK First Choice nipple on. It fit, but the ring base around the nipple, that sits up against the cap is wider on the MAM nipple and narrower on the NUK First Choice nipple, making a leakage problem. The rest fits, if only the base was wider on the NUK First Choice.

But no worry, my daughter took the nipple fine. Thank God she’s not picky…I mean she sometimes sucks on her pacifier upside down…sometimes she puts it in herself…and its wrong…lol..

Anyway, just thought I’d share this incase someone wanted to know!

  42. Danielle and Alicia, I’ve been on the phone and Emailing Gerber. Their Gentle flow bottles they tell me are polypropylene and yes you can tell the bottles are not made of BPA (at least that’s what I thought.) I want to use their Gentle Flow bottles but can’t find them where I live. Walmart, Zellers, Shoppers Drugmart, Toysrus, are telling me they have a list of bottles that contain BPA. Gentle flow happens to be on all of their lists. Toysrus manager went as far as telling me the list was from the Government (which isn’t true – I called their main help line) I find it quite annoying that the only bottles that are on the shelves are very expensive.

  43. Does anyone know if the Avent nipples are BPA free? I am assuming they are since they are not made of hard plastic, but I can’t find anything to confirm that. Thanks for the tip on using the sippy cup bases. I’ve been stressing out about having to buy all new bottles since my baby is already 7 months! Thanks.

  44. How does the Born Free venting system compare to Dr. Brown’s? Which one works better?

  45. Heather, Avent nipples are made of silicone. Are you using the sippy bases for bottles? I only have 2 bases so far – maybe thats the best for my Liam because the avent nipples are all he will use.

  46. Heather, Avent nipples are made of silicone. Are you using the sippy bases for bottles? I only have 2 bases so far – maybe thats the best for my Liam because the avent nipples are all he will use.

  47. Does anyone know if there are any sippy cup tops that will fit the green to grow bottle? I have some and would like to transition my daughter to a cup and she refuses to take anything but the green to grow bottle!

Also, my sister wants to get a GrowPure Multi-stage, but I cannot find any reviews on it.

    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks – Monica

  48. Hi,
When I first heard about this BPA stuff, all I could think of was the Dr. Browns bottles my daughter has been using are the ones my son used about 2 1/2 yrs ago. I totally dreaded the thought of having to buy all new bottles and finding ones that would work with my gassy daughter. So I just went to Wal-Mart bought the cheap Parents Choice Brand that say they are BPA free, until I could get to a bigger store with a better variety. Well I decided to see if I cut the Dr. Browns Vent System if they would work together and they do so the collar fits the bottle great. So I paid 3.00 for three bottles, instead of an arm and a leg. I hope this helps some folks out that might not be able to afford new bottles.

  49. This information is so great! I had used Avent with my son, now 4, and was using it again w/ my daughter, who’s now 8 months. A couple months ago I bought some Green to Grow bottles & nipples, but I hate the nipples. DD will use them, but they collapse half-way through her feeding because they aren’t vented. The Avent nipples do not fit Green to Grow. So, I’m looking for nipples that fit the Green to Grow bottles. From reading through this all, it sounds like the Born Free & Dr. Brown’s nipples will fit Green to Grow? Anyone have a recommendation to which to use? Or, it sounds like the other option is to buy the Avent Magic Cup to use with the Avent nipples? Thanks so much for this great info!

  50. PS – sorry, to clarify, I bought the wide-neck Green to Grow bottles.

  51. I too am wondering if the Dr. Brown vent system works with the Green to Grow bottle. I have a 2nd coming soon and am trying to save $ over buying the Born Free. Anyone know?

  52. Hi, I just received the nurture pure bottles and my daughter is not crazy about the nipples, does anyone know if any other nipples fit in these bottles?

  53. I tried to use the Dr. Brown wide-neck vent system with the Green to Grow bottles, and they DO NOT work! I’m SO disappointed because the GtG bottles are so cute (vain, I know). The vent system fits the GtG wide neck bottles, but you also have to use the Dr. Brown collar (because the GtG collar is too short), and that’s where the problem comes in. The GtG bottle neck is a hair smaller than the Dr. Brown bottles, so the collar won’t screw on. Guess I’ll have to buy Born Free since it sounds like that’s compatible.

  54. Hi. I would like to know if the avent nipples fit Born free bottles? I read n one of the comments that it doesn’t work with Green to grow. I want to change my avent bottles but my kids might have a hard time with the new nipple. Please suggest BPA bottles that can work well with avent nipples.

Thank you so much for keeping us inofrmed.

  55. We had to ‘emergency’ start bottle feeding and did not have any bpa-free items on the shelves of our local stores. so baby got used to the avent nipples and when we tried to switch to the sassy mam ultivent that finally arrived from our online order – we met with loads of resistance (and could not fit the avent nipples into the sassy bottles). thanks to this post – we bought some born free nipples to match the sassy bottles and were able to switch w/o problems.

  56. This info is AWESOME. My daughter is 4mos old and we’ve been using Avent. I bought the EvenFlo classic’s but the small nipple is HORRIBLE …it collapses and then she gets frustrated because there is no flow coming out. I have to keep pulling the bottle out of her mouth to get some air to go in.
Thanks to these posts I’m going to get some sippy cup bases and let her keep using her Avent nipples (yea!!).
My daughter and I thank you :-)

  57. Thanks so much Julia for answering my question! It’s a great help.

  58. From above:
“Evenflo’s Comfort Select nipple is quite a neat little invention. It fits almost any regular neck bottle and serves like a wide neck nipple. We really dig it. ”

Do the Evenflo Comfort Select nipples fit the regular Green to Grow bottles/rings? This would be the answer to my manic quest for the perfect bottle.

Thanks for all the great information!

  59. Ashley,

Yes, they sure do! The Comfort Select nipples fit most standard neck bottles.

Thank you for the kudos :)

    Alicia

  60. Trish – the sassy bottles are also price comparable to the avents which was very attractive to us!

  61. Thank you so much, Alicia! You made my day. I’ve ordered some to play around with from The Soft Landing.

One more question, does anyone know if either Playtex Nurser nipples or Nuk nipples will work with any of the wide-mouth BPA bottles? (GtG, Born Free or Thinkbaby).

    Cheers

  62. Oops, I didn’t mean the Nuk nipples… I know those are supposed to work with GtG, although I’ve heard otherwise (????). I actually meant the other Gerber nipples, the non-Nuks. I assume these are probably the same fit as the Nuk but was hoping someone had some first-hand knowlege. If I remember correctly from my son, 4 years ago, the Playtex nurser nipples and the Gerbers were interchangeable and they were such great nipples. My son loved them and never had any issues at all (gas, spitup, etc).

    Thanks again!

  63. Thanks to all for this valuable info!

We just made some changes and I have found that the Dr. Brown’s venting system, nipples and collars work in Parents Choice BPA-free bottles as well. They are about $1 per bottle! All you need to do is trim the bottom of the venting tube.

  64. I just read that Dr. Brown has come out with a BPA free plastic bottle that is starting to show up some at babies r us stores. Also the safe mama blog has a post stating Dr. Brown will send you up to 3 of these bottles if you send in UPC codes. I’m planning to use born free bottles but I hope this is helpful.

  66. re gentleflow bottles, i am in ny and they are available at walgreens and shoprite stores.

re evenflo classics…try the evenflo comfi nipples..work like a charm..vent great and are specially shaped for a good mouth seal..i found tis combo better than the gerbers.

  67. Update:

I got my order today (thank you Soft Landing!) and have been doing some nipple swapping/experimenting myself so wanted to provide an update on some of my previously asked questions.

The Evenflo Comfort Select Nipples (wide neck nipple which fits regular neck bottles) does indeed fit well with both the regular Green to Grow bottles and the Siliskin bottles with no leaks. This is indeed a cool little nipple! Unfortunately with the Siliskin, the bottle cap will not fit back on with the Evenflow nipple but the cap does fit back on the Green to Grow regular bottle with the Evenflo nipple. This seems to be a nice little combo!

I previously asked if the Playtex Nurser nipples or the Gerber Nipples (called Dome Nipple), which are interchangeable and almost identical, fit with any of the BPA bottles. I did test them out on the Think Baby bottle and they do NOT fit. Think Baby’s nipple is not nearly as wide-mouth as the Playtex nurser nipples. My son loved these nipples when he was a baby so this is a wee bit dissappointing for me as I was hoping to use them on bambino 2 but don’t care for the Playtex Nurser system. I even tried switching the Playtex collar onto the Think Baby bottle, no go. Think Baby is slightly smaller in diameter.

I didn’t buy the Born Free bottle but I will to try that one as well. (Unless someone already has) I have a feeling the Playtex Nurser nipples will probably be a bit wide for those too.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Ashley

  68. Will the NUK nipples fit on the Playtex Nursers?

  69. no, the nuks dont fit on playtex nursers..I tried!..nuks work excellent on evenflo classic plastic bpa free bottles. my sister uses that combo.

  70. I am a new dad to be and have been following the BPA stuff like crazy. So here is my question;

Does anyone know if the First Years BreastFlow nipple will fit on any other bottles? I have been told by numerous moms that this nipple helped them easily switch between a bottle and a breast and vice versa. So if anyone has any leads, please let me know. Yes I am aware the BreastFlow Bottle has BPA in it, but I have been told that the nipple is ok.

Any help for a new dad to be would be greatly appreciated.

  71. I am also trying to find out if there any BPA-free bottles that might fit the breastflow nipples.

I bought a breastflow bottle yesterday to try the nipple with other bottles I have. The diameter of the nipple is larger than that of the Bornfree or the SassyMam nipples, so my guess is that there isn’t a bpa-free bottle that will fit the breastflow nipple. But if anyone knows of one, please let me know.

  72. I also would like to know if the FIrst Years Breastflow nipple fits any BPA free bottles. I don’t mind glass. I am going to be returning to work and need to have a bottle system to replace breastfeeding. My 1st born DIDNOT like ANY nipple and it was a very difficult transition for us. I don’t want to go thru that again….

  73. after trying almost every bottle on the market, i finally bought a complete set of green to grow bottles and nine level 2 nipples because my daughter just turned four months and it had been taking her almost 45 minutes to eat four ounces. i love the bottles, and because she doesnt have a spitting-up/gas issue, i was looking for something without an elaborate venting system that would take me all night to clean. but, i do not like the green to grow nipples! the level 1 nipples are so slow that sometimes nothing even comes out when the bottle is inverted. DD takes so long to eat that she normally just gives up and goes to sleep on the bottle. so i gave the level 2 nipples a try and they have got to be the fastest nipples on the market! the milk doesnt even “drip” out when the bottle is inverted; it sprays out in a stream! DD chokes and gags on her milk and it pours out the sides of her mouth. it wasnt just a faulty nipple. i checked all nine that i ordered and they all do it, even when the milk is cold straight from the fridge. the difference between the level 1 and 2 is so dramatic, and neither one is really acceptable. so now i guess im on the hunt again for the perfect nipple to fit the perfect bottle. *sigh* ive already spent an absurd amount of money on this bottle search and i think that by the time i find a good combo, DD will be doing keg stands and wont be needing a bottle anymore…

  74. I had a question – I have an Advent Isis breast pump. I want to use the born free bottles. What BPA free bottles/milk storage will fit the Isis? Do the Advent milk storage containers have BPA in them too?I ordered a converter online through born free to make the wide neck regular – it hasn’t come yet, but I was hoping that would make them compatible.

    Thanks!

  75. Could someone please let me know which BPA free bottles will work with the playtex ventaire nipples? My little one simply won’t take any other nipple.

  76. I would like to know if the Nuk nipples fit on either the Born Free or Dr. Brown’s BPA free bottles? My three-month-old does best with Nuks and right now is using them with the Avent bottles I want to get rid of. If nothing else, maybe they would fit on the sippy cup bases?
    Thanks

  77. Hi — Thanks for the great report! My lactation consultant recommends that I use the DR Brown’s wideneck bottle — but I’m concerned re: BPA in that version. Did your findings mean that I can just buy those nipples and put them on your Born Free Bottles? Or do I need to buy the actual bottles because it only works if you use the Dr B’s nipples, venting system in tandem on the Born Free?

Many thanks again for the excellent report!

  78. I had Avent bottles when my dtr was born 2 months ago and then all these reports came out about the BPA in bottles. I researched the good bottles to use and found that Avent Nipples fit with the Gerber Gentle Flow bottles. I found Gerber Gentle Flow bottles at Walgreens. I have not found that the ring allows dripping or spilling due to tightness. I have been very happy with these bottles.

  79. Wow – that’s great news, Jessica! Thanks for sharing with us.

    Alicia

  80. Has anyone found out about the playtex drop ins nipples? Will they fit any of these wide neck bottles? Are there any nipples similar?

  81. We used the Breastflow bottle (has BPA) with an Avent Tempo liner. Though I hate the waste, the Breastflow nipple is unique and worked for our baby for the first couple of months of his life.

Now that he is feeding from a bottle well, I’m going to try the Dr. Brown’s nipple and vent in a BornFree bottle. Does that really work?

  82. I am currently using the Born Free 5oz bottles with the Dr. Brown nipples and it works perfectly. We were using the Dr. Brown preemie bottles to start off with (was the only bottle he would eat from) but when I had a hard time locating the new BPA free bottles I ended up switching to the Born Free.

But, since the Born Free are wide neck I had to switch to the wide neck Dr. Brown nipple as well and my little guy isn’t as fond of it as he was the standard size nipple. He always has little dribbles down his chin now. So, now I am here ordering Green to Grow nipples and MAM Utilivent nipples since they are very similar in shape to the standard Dr Brown nipples.

  83. Note that Second Nature nipples (great for breastfed babies) fit wide mouth Green to Grow bottles perfectly.

  84. I am so happy that I found this site. I bought avent bottles when my twins were born, but the nipples ran too fast for them and I ended up replacing the nipple with gerber nuk nipples. Then when I heard about BPA, I threw away all the avent bottles and replaced them with Gerber’s gentle flow bottles but I kept the rings and nipples I’d been using all along and just screwed them right on top. I was looking for nuby’s wide mouth bottle with handles when I found this site because nuk nipples are the only ones my twins will take and I heard they fit in nuby bottles. I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me that I could put my avent rings with nuk nipples in them on BPA free avent sippy cups. I feel so stupid because I have 2 avent sippys sitting in the cabinet. Now I dont’ even have to bother finding the nubys because the cups have handles and that’s one of the reasons I was looking for the nubys.

  85. I am so overwhelmed!!! I have Playtex Designer Series Bottles and Drop-In liners. I know the liners are BPA free, but the bottles are not. Is this dangerous? Because the liquid is not coming in contact with the actual Bottle? Does anyone know? I haven’t even opened them yet but they were a gift from target (of course no receipt was given) so I cannot return them. Please let me know!!

  86. Hi Kristin,

It is overwhelming isn’t it? In our opinion, if the liquid isn’t touching the polycarbonate plastic and your baby isn’t chewing on the outside of the bottle, we don’t see any reason for concern.

You should be just fine using them :)

    Alicia

  87. Thank you so much!! I will keep them for my husband to use with the baby once we start feeding him with a bottle. Knowing my husband he will not want to wash any bottles so I will use them for him. I have already bought 4 of the Born Free 9 oz Bottles, but thought I might try the Green to Grow. I am not sure if my son will need the vent system. I had a huge Dr. Browns gift set but after reading all this, I took them back. I want to start bottle feeding one time a day soon because at the end of August I will be returning to work to teach. Is Green to Grow coming out with a vent system for their bottles? I thought you mentioned that in an earlier thread…

  88. There is a BPA Free Bottle that works perfectly with avent nipples and it just look like the avent bottle. This bpa free bottle is the Gerber GentleFlow Bottles – 9oz. 3pk. What a wonderful bottle and the price is great! VERY CHEAP!! Here is the link where you can take a look at them http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-GentleFlow-Bottles-9oz-3pk/dp/B00155ZVW6/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1216334140&sr=8-1

  89. Does anyone know if the Gerber Gentle Flow works with the Avent nipples only, or do you need the nipple rings as well?

And, on another note, we have the Green to Grow regular necks with the Evenflo Comfort Select nipples, and I do not like the combo. Primarily because I thought the nipples were vented and they are not, so they collapse after just a few sips.

  90. I am using playtex airvent and would like to find BPA free bottle that fits the nipple. I like how it flows and so does my daughter. Does anyone know of a bottle that will fit the airvent nipple? HELP!

  91. I am also using Playtex Airvent and would like to find a BPA free bottle that fits the nipple. I would appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this.

    Thanks in advance!

  92. For the other 2 who had questions on Playtex Airvent, I did a search on google, and on drugstore.com I found this note:

This nipple must be used only with VentAire® NaturalShape™ bottles because the bottle vents at the bottom, not at the nipple, for bubble free feeding. The nipple will not work on any other reusable bottle.

I am a new Mom, and I am learning about venting systems. For those of you who have more experience, does it look like we do not have an option to use the nipples on another bottle?

    Thanks for your help.

  93. I spoke with Playtex customer service this morning, and here is some additional information I found out. If you have the VentAire Advanced Wide system, those nipples can be used with the Playtex drop-in system. The VentAire system (not advanced) is not compatible with the drop-in system. The person did say that the nipples on the drop-in system and VentAire systems are similar. I know the drop-in system bottle is not BPA free, but the liner and nipple is. I am not sure where your comfortability lies with this situation. The customer service person also confirmed what I had read that Playtex products will all be BPA free by the end of 2008.

  94. Does anyone know if the Gerber dome nipples (same line as the classic and flex) fit into any glass bottles? Like Born Free?

I too was on a mission to find a nipple that my baby would latch onto that would fit into a BPA free bottle.
    Nipples I’ve tried:
Early Years Breastflow w/ tempo liner- worked great, but nipple collapses.
Gerber Gentleflow (also found in Hy-Vee in the midwest)- nipple collapses on that too. Also tried the Avent in it and they collapsed also.
Playtex Nursers- not a good latch.

I finally found a nipple she would latch on to. The Gerber dome silicone nipple. It fits with all New Traditions bottles. I’m going to try out the Clear View bottles if I can find them as I just found out they are BPA free.
These Gerber nipples also fit into the Playtex Nurser and almost fit into the GentleFlow. I’ve used them in the GentleFlow and they work if you don’t tighten it all the way or put them into the ring all the way. They do leak if you don’t get it just right though.
I really want to use glass, hence my question at the beginning!

  95. I was hesitant to switch my son from the Avent bottles because he had a hard time transitioning from nursing to the bottle and was finally doing well with the Avent bottles. I recently found that the Gerber Gentle Flow bottles (which are BPA free) are almost exactly like the Avent. I am using the Avent bottle ring/nipple on the Gerber ones and the seem to work perfectly.

The only bad thing is that Gerber recommended not to use the bottle in a bottle warmer, so it takes a bit longer to warm up the milk, but that’s ok because I now have peace of mind that my son is not being exposed to BPA.

  96. how about in sassy mam bottle,,what other brand of nipple can fit on their bottle??thnx

  97. Stephanie – I wanted to let you know that I saw that Avent is making BPA free bottles now. I found them at Target and Babies R Us.

  98. Similar to some earlier questions, anyone know of a bottle that will fit with the first years breast flow nipple??

  99. Have seen this asked several times, but haven’t yet seen any answers –
has anyone found a glass bottle (or even BPA-free plastic) that works with the Breastflow nipples?
Softlanding, is this something you all could investigate since it seems to be such a hot topic?
    Thanks!

  100. Anyone try MAM bottles with Dr. Brown’s wide nipple? We tried Born Free #3 nipples but they did collapse (he has rice in his bottles for reflux). Anyone have luck with any other nipple on the MAM bottle? Thanks

  101. We have been searching for a glass bottle that will fit the Breastflow nipples- would appreciate any help on this continuing topic! Thanks in advance for everyone’s assistance!

  102. Definitely interested in what other bottles the breastflow nipple fits (without having to use drop-ins)! I’ll be keeping my eye on this thread!! Thanks, everyone!

  103. ARRHHH!!! I’m so over whelmed! Apparently I have the dr brown bottles WITH BPA! My son is 7 mos and I just got him off the breast!! Is there a bottle that works with the dr brown vent system AND the nipples? I don’t want to spend a lot of money since my son will soon be using a Sippy cups. I just don’t know what to do!! Please help!

  104. Hi Dalia,

I’m glad you realized it before using the bottles heavily. Dr. Brown’s now makes a BPA free polypropylene bottle. You can find them here.

    Hope that helps,

    Alicia

  105. Does anyone know for sure if the wide Gerber NUK nipple will fit in the wide neck Green to Grow or Think Baby bottle securely? I have been through so many bottles, first trying to find a nipple that my twins would take and later trying to find a BPA free alternative.

I have read some reviews that say Green to Grow bottles are compatible with Gerber NUK nipples but other reviews say that they don’t fit securely. My twins are 9 months old and I don’t want them to be able to pull the nipple right out of the bottle.

Right now I am using Nuby bottles with Born Free nipples which I do not recommend at all. The Born Free nipples are very soft and collapse constantly. I bought them as a last resort because the nuby nipples were stretched out just from normal use and washing and were leaking all over the place. I cannot believe how hard it is to find a bottle that works and is BPA free.

  106. NUK ORTHODONTIC NIPPLES WORK ON THE THINKBABY BOTTLES USING THE THINKBABY COLLAR!

  107. IN RESPONSE TO LO, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, MY LITTLE ONE LOVES THE NUK NIPPLES (WE USED THEM IN THE HOSPITAL)…TRY THEM ON THE THINKBABY USING THE THINKBABY COLLAR. THEY FIT…

  108. Thank you for the responses, I will have to try Thinkbaby bottles.

Also I just wanted to chime in on using wide Nuk nipples with Nuby wide neck bottles. They do fit, however they don’t lock in as well as they could and my 9 month old babies are able to get the nipple out of the collar altogether and then of course the bottle spills everywhere.

  109. Okay, I tried the Green To Grow wide neck bottles with Gerber Nuk nipples today.

JUST BECAUSE THE NUK NIPPLE FITS THROUGH THE HOLE OF THE COLLAR DOES NOT MEAN IT FITS!!! THE NUK NIPPLE DOES NOT LOCK IN SECURELY.

I placed the NUK nipple in the Green To Grow bottle and twisted it on tightly. I pulled on the nipple to see if it was secure, and it SEEMED to be fine. Then I handed it to my 10 month old, she grabbed it by the collar and the nipple, somehow ended up squeezing the base of the nipple, and the nipple popped right out of the collar and formula spilled everywhere.

I actually called Green To Grow on the telephone and asked them this very question before I bought these bottles. I was assured that the nipple fits in securely and “an adult might be able to get it out but a baby definitely wouldn’t.” Obviously, that isn’t true. I drove forty minutes one way and spent 24 dollars on two bottles today based on this advice, just to have my baby end up soaking wet with formula the very first time I tried using the Nuk nipple in the Green To Grow bottle. It is not safe to give a baby who holds her own bottle a bottle where they can get the nipple out.

  110. [...] ** Dr Browns bottle nipples fit with Green to Grow bottles. As we know once a baby is comfy with something it’s sometimes a pain to change so it’s good to know we don’t have to change everything if we don’t have to. Alicia of The Soft Landing did a more exhaustive report on what nipples fit what bottles. Read about it on her blog here. [...]

  111. Straight from the Dr. Brown’s website:
Can I use Dr. Brown’s nipples on other brands of bottles?

Dr. Brown’s nipples are of the highest quality. However they are specifically designed for the Dr. Brown’s baby bottles and should not be used on other brands of bottles. The Dr. Brown’s nipple does not have a vacuum operated rim-vent like other brands of bottles. If a Dr. Brown’s nipple is used on an un-vented bottle the baby may experience feeding difficulties and could experience the discomfort commonly described as colic.

That’s part of my problem. My twins are used to a vented nipple.

The Green to Grow nipple does not have a vent. It collapses, is too soft (although better than the Born Free nipple in that regard) and is a hassle. Yes I did try the “expert” flow and it still collapsed, and badly. The whole nipple recoiled into the top of the bottle and when I twised off the collar to fix it, it shot down into the formula and I had to fish it out.

My major problem with this situation is that the company names NUK nipples specifically as a replacement. You might get away with using a NUK nipple in a green to grow bottle if you are feeding a newborn but my baby (10 months) got the NUK nipple out of the GTG bottle effortlessly, she wasn’t even trying to pull it out.

I emailed GTG about this and they did offer me other nipples. I have already tried their expert flow and they were just as bad as the slow flow ones. I’m still trying to figure out why 10 ounce bottles come with 0-3 month slow flow nipples. For 11.00 a bottle the least they could offer is an appropriate nipple flow.

It’s too bad about the nipple problems. The bottles are cute and way more sturdy and durable than I imagined they would be even if they are basically useless as far as I’m concerned.

  112. I bought the Nuby wide neck bottle with the handles. My daughter did not like the vari-flow nipple. Too much came out for her at once.
I tried the Avent, did not fit good with the nuby.
I tried the Dr. Browns,. the nipple collapses.
The nam nipple did fit, but my daughter didn’t like that nipple either.
    These are all wide neck.

  113. Bec, you mentioned Avent nipples. Avent now makes a BPA free bottle. Not just the ones with disposable bags. They’re just like the original Avent bottle except there is a yellowish tinge to the plastic. Target sells them. That’s what I finally ended up using.

  114. Has anyone tried using a Dr. Brown bottle (with the vent system) with a different nipple.

  115. Thanks for posting this it was extremley helpful!

Our baby is only 5 weeks old and what a crazy bottle experience weve had!

To start with the good, because of your website, and postings, we are now using the Avent nipples on the Nuby wide neck bottles (8oz). The nuby bottles are cheaper 3 for $10, compared to the Avent $12 for 1 bottle. Then we get the great quality and variety of the tried and true Avent nipples.
IF we want to go to a disposable system for traveling, I could buy the Avent Tempo Nurser…but the liners are expensive, so I would use them sparenly.

    The failers:

Evenflo Glass: Nipple wore out within a few days and suddenly became a fast flo nipple. Leaked extremley around the ring.

Nuby Narrow: Couldn’t get any formula from slow flo nipple, varable flo that came with bottle was to fast for him. Didn’t know I could put different nipples on bottles.

Avent BPA free: leaked like CRAZY!

Playtex Drop ins: used the most…he liked the brown nipple best. Nipple wore out within a couple weeks and suddenly became a fast flo nipple. Also found cracks in nipple. Bottles also leaked, had to keep them upright when traveling.
Did the math, replacing nipples once a month, and buying liners would have been extremley costly.
Customer service is great however, every time we called with a complaint they sent us $5 to $20 worth of coupons to buy for of they’re products.

Once again, thanks for posting your experiements!!

  116. I’m just seeking support here. I am very distraught. An assistant in my son’s daycare room took it upon herself to try a new bottle with him – the regular old NON BPA-free Avent they had kicking around!! Anyone know what the risks of his short-term exposure to BPA may be? I know they use a bottle warmer to hear all of their bottles…and he has only received a couple of feedings (maybe 2-3) through this other bottle. I just hope I can get it through their heads that it is SO VERY IMPORTANT NOT to use this bottle again!!! I even ran out and bought their BPA-free sippy cup (less expensive than the bottle) with nipples to replace the one they “tried out” with him. I’m still so angry at this though. How could they do this without checking with me first?!?!?!

  117. I was under the impression (from discussion threads on this site and others) that the Gerber Gentle Flow bottle is BPA-free. However, Gerber itself does not list this bottle as being BPA-free (only the Clear View and Fashion Tints). What’s the deal? If anyone has any info, please let me know as I recently switched from Avent to Gerber Gentle Flow and was hoping I was now in the clear.

  118. Hi Jen,

Labels are not required by law, so many manufacturers don’t bother with them. Both ZRecsGuide.com and BabyEarth.com list them as BPA free, and they are both reputable sources.

If you are still unsure, you may want to contact Gerber directly to double check.

    Alicia

  119. I called Gerber and asked them about Gentle Flow bottles before I tried them and they assured me that they are BPA free

  120. Thanks, Lo!

    Alicia

  121. Has anyone tried putting Green to Grow standard neck nipples on Nuby non-drip bottles… the ones that come in the inexpensive 3pk? My son, Dante, started off on Nuby, which I loved, loved, loved… but found replacing the nipples to be a nightmare! We switched to G to G, which I have HATED from the start… I won’t even list the issues I’ve had. Luckily, my little one has never had a problem drinking from them. I’d like to switch back to Nuby, and figured that I’d just use the G to G nipples with them. I read on Diapers, etc. that they should fit any standard nipple… but we all know how these sites are with their “accurate” information…

  122. Just wanted to post that Gerber NUK bottles are now BPA free.

The packaging isn’t marked yet but if you look at the bottles they are made of a cloudy plastic. The patterns and colors are exactly the same as before but the plastic is cloudy.

  123. I just want to start by saying I am thankful that my son is not fussy about nipples or bottles. He’ll take playtex, nuk, evenflow, nuby. The only problem he has had is with the nuby vari flows — takes him forever to finish a bottle; however, they are fabulous for helping to get rid of hiccups (just a 1/2 oz water in the bottle, a few minutes of sucking and voila)!

I have the Lansinoh pump and standard bottles (no PBA) but I can not find the nipples to go with them. I have tried the NUK and the evenflo, but they leak. The nubys were perfect except for the problem mentioned above. Anyone know of a nipple that fits like a nuby and flows like the nuk/evenflo slow flow? I am trying not to spend a fortune, which is why I don’t want to use the dropins, even though he likes them! :)

  124. I am trying to find a nipple that is compatiable to my Medela bottles. My daughter does not like the silicone nipples as it is an adjustment from her mother’s natural breast. Is latex the way to go? What fits?

    • Hi Michael,

We recommend sticking with natural latex rubber nipples and avoiding synthetic latex. As far as we know, all latex nipples currently available in the U.S., with the exception of Natursutten, are made from a synthetic chemical cocktail and are known to contain a chemical called nitrosamines. The Natursutten standard neck nipples fit the Medela bottles and you can find them at our store here.

      Alicia

  125. my former daycare lady gave me two born free spouts to use on my playtex nurser. I didn’t believe that they fit, but they do. The ridge is wide enough to just set the spout on the bottle, and place the cap on overtop, and screw it on. She told me that this is how she got her son on a sippy.
Today I tried the born free bottle nipple on the playtex nurser, and It seems to work. Not sure about the venting system, but we will see.
Playtex does not offer (in canada) a med flo in the breast like nipple. The slow was too slow for my son, and the fast to fast!
So we will see how this goes.

  126. [...] you know what that means – another opportunity to play mix and match – just like we did with our bottles and nipples.  It’s one of those obsessive little perks we enjoy thanks to our [...]

  127. has anyone tried Mam nipples on Dr. Brown wideneck bottles?
