Which Munchkin Products are BPA and PVC Free?

May 7, 2008 by Alicia
Filed under Pacifiers, Safer Baby Bottles

Munchkin has been one of the most evasive baby product manufacturers for us. We’ve contacted them repeatedly for over six months and have been ignored at every turn.

THEN – lo and behold – one of our readers tipped us off about a list Munchkin published on their website. While the list doesn’t include teethers, it does cover materials used in baby bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, feeding accessories and disposable products. It turns out that Munchkin actually has a great line of sippy cups and disposable products that are completely BPA and PVC free.

ZRecs.com was able to interact with Munchkin earlier this year to provide a list of BPA free products. ZRecs.com also pointed out that Munchkin is a member of the Coalition for Consumer Choice, a pro-BPA group which opposes BPA reform on behalf of major toy and feeding product companies and chemical industry trade organizations.

A CHALLENGE TO MUNCHKIN: Your consumers are ready for you to take the next step! Just do it – go ahead and lay out the material lists for the rest of your products. We would love to be able to recommend your BPA and PVC free teethers, bath toys and developmental toys.

Does anyone know when Munchkin started phasing BPA out of their products? I have a formula dispenser that has the year "2001" stamped on the bottom and am wondering if this product was made before they phased BPA out?

Sounds like the safety spoons should be trashed since they contain PVC even though they are phthalate free...

Prior to reading the above article regarding which Munchkin products are BPA free, I had purchased the White Hot feeding spoons because it was stamped 'BPA free'. I suspect Munchkin has since made these spoons BPA free as they have stamped 'BPA free' on the packaging of these spoons ? Would they still contain PVC?

I also have a Beaba cook, and I believe that the models made in Europe had the BPA in them, but the ones made for Williams Sonoma are BPA free. My friend works at Williams Sonoma as well, and she verified this for me.
  • Hi Fiona,

I read an article back in Sept. 2009 on Zrecs confirming that the Beaba Babycook is definitely BPA-free, and Williams Sonoma also confirmed that for us too. I called again today to double check and they re-confirmed that the bowl is BPA-free. I guess you'll just have to go with your gut on this one . . .

Unfortunately I heard otherwise about the Beaba Babycook. Apparently in the item description, it stated that the basket was made out of polycarbonate (BPA) and when this raised questions, the description miraculously changed from polycarbonate to polypropylene. Here is where I read about it http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/news/?p=120
Sorry to burst any bubbles. I'm still trying to find a food processor w/o all the chemicals....guess I will have to stick to glass in this instance.

I just got a great product for my baby's food that is made of polypropylene and it steams, blends, and warms the food. It's the Beaba Babycook by Williams Sonoma.

Wow, never thought about the dishwasher! Great question Johanna! I would like to know the answer to this question as well. What good is it to buy all this safe stuff and then wash our dishes and cookware in tainted water?

FYI - I used my food processor a lot for the baby and was greatly dissapointed to find out that all of the major brands I called about are made of polycarbonate!

    Hello,
This may be slightly off topic but I went to buy a dishwasher today and the racks are made of PVC or nylon. I bought nylon hoping it is safer but the entire dishwasher is also lined with plastic. Does anyone know whether I should be concerned? We aren't eating out of it but water heated at high temperatures is on the plates that we eat off of and also on the plastic. Please tell me if I am going completely overboard on this.

    Love the website,
    Johanna
  • Hi Tracy,

Munchkin's pdf says that the White Hot Safety Spoons (pictured above) do contain PVC. You may have confused them with the Soft Tip Infant Spoons.

    Best,
