Which Munchkin Products are BPA and PVC Free?

Munchkin has been one of the most evasive baby product manufacturers for us. We’ve contacted them repeatedly for over six months and have been ignored at every turn.
THEN – lo and behold – one of our readers tipped us off about a list Munchkin published on their website. While the list doesn’t include teethers, it does cover materials used in baby bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, feeding accessories and disposable products. It turns out that Munchkin actually has a great line of sippy cups and disposable products that are completely BPA and PVC free.
ZRecs.com was able to interact with Munchkin earlier this year to provide a list of BPA free products. ZRecs.com also pointed out that Munchkin is a member of the Coalition for Consumer Choice, a pro-BPA group which opposes BPA reform on behalf of major toy and feeding product companies and chemical industry trade organizations.
A CHALLENGE TO MUNCHKIN: Your consumers are ready for you to take the next step! Just do it – go ahead and lay out the material lists for the rest of your products. We would love to be able to recommend your BPA and PVC free teethers, bath toys and developmental toys.

Thanks for the Munchkin info! Do you have any info on the safety of Fisher-Price products? I have searched and searched and come up empty handed. I called the FP company and was told that no one there could tell me what kind of plastics are used in their baby products. I was astounded! I decided to return all of the Fisher-Price products that I received from my baby showers. I hated to do it, but I’d rather be safe than sorry when it comes to my baby’s safety.
I am pleased to tell you that our products at BABISIL are toxin free ( that’s Phthalate and Bisphenol-A free)!
We have both the ‘Flexible Feeding Range’ (training spoon, mini suction mat and soft and squidgy silicone mu bib) and ‘Second to Breast’ baby Silbottle (bottle with collapsible silicone inner chamber – also designed to help with colic) and accessories.
All especially designed for peace of mind!
yup… i had those heat safe spoons… we tossed em and bought the much cuter nuby spoons…. i emailed them and got a “generic response we comply w/all safety guidelines” w/the “safe levels of blah blah blah”
in other words, yeah we’re not answering you. makes you so angry… i wont buy another munchkin product… and that’s the ONLY THING THEY WILL RESPOND TO… plummeting sales… so buying products from company’s w/higher standards and open policies… (unlike tupperware) and maybe they’ll get the point!

Please let us know about Fisher-Price. They dominate the toy market, and my kid is turning one in about 2 weeks! It is hard convincing family members that I am not high maintenance, just concerned for my child’s health. And my kid puts everything in his mouth. I would love to have proof for friends and family that FP’s(and other companies) products are harmful. Or better yet, I would love to hear that some of FP’s products are safe!
Boo,
I wish we could help you there, but Fisher-Price will not disclose any of their material lists. They claim to be “proprietary” in order not to have to share the info with concerned parents.
Your best bet at this point is to avoid all Fisher Prices products.

I’m wondering if you know about the Munchkin Dishwasher Basket and whether it is BPA free(?) I couldn’t find it on the Munchkin website. Thanks, Sara
Are munchkin bath toys phthalate and bpa free?
Hi Sara and A Mom,
Munchkin still won’t return our calls, so we don’t know about the rest of their products.
Alicia
I just received this email from Munchkin:
Hello Sara-
The Deluxe Dishwasher basket does not contain BPA.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact us again.
Have a great day!
Thank You-

I just found your web site. It is so helpful! Thank you.
I downloaded the PDF that you linked to on the munchkin site because I recently bought their safety spoons for my daughter. Currently all of the feeding accessories, including these spoons, are listed as BPA free. I’m confused because that’s not what you said you found when you looked at the list a couple weeks ago. Do you have an old copy of the PDF? What’s going on here?
Are the six pack of infant spoon, bpa, pvc, and phthalate free?
Lis,
Thanks for the great compliment! I’m glad you find our blog helpful
The Safety Spoons are BPA free, they just aren’t PVC free. We try to help parents avoid PVC in feeding gear too, as it is also toxic, but for different reasons than BPA.
Alicia
Are older products listed as BPA safe ok? We’ve been has some of these items for almost two years now.
Thanks for the great website!
On the above Munchkin pdf, it lists alot of other materials that are used in their products. Are these materials safe? I’m referring to polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate, thermoplastic elastomer, ammonia polyacrylate, propylenglycol, Kathon CG preservative, polycarbonate, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, phthalate-free polyvinyl chloride. Thanks for any information you can give me!
Hi Liza,
Thank you for the compliment on our website!
Those are great questions. We’ve found that the following ingredients do not contain toxic chemicals:
1) polypropylene
2) polyethelyene
3) thermoplastic elastomer
4) acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
You should avoid the following:
1) polycarbonate (contains bisphenol-a)
2) phthalate-free polyvinyl chloride
We haven’t researched the following:
1) ammonia polyacrylate
2) propylenglycol
3) Kathon CG preservative
Thank you for your time and efforts in researching munchims products. I am
disturbed that i did not contact your web site sooner as my daughter used the nuk trainer cup for almost a year . I hope she will not suffer any consequences.
Should I have her tested?
I have inquired about a few products…
Gerber Soft Bite spoons
Gerber Bunch a Bowls
Munchkin Soft Tip Infant Spoon 6 pack (package says BPA free)
I called both Gerber and Munchkin…..Gerber said the Soft Bite spoons are stainless steel and silicone and confirmed they are BPA/PVC free. The bowls are #5 (made in America, yay) and polypropylene with a food-grade dye, also BPA/PVC free.
Munchkin told me their spoons are polypropylene and BPA/PVC free too.
I feel like I left something out – did I forget to ask them anything? Would you say these are a safe choice?
Hey. I read on Munchkin’s website that ALL of their products are now phthalate free and they are phasing out BPA this year.
Greetings,
Thank you for all the terrific information you provide. I’ve relied on it more than once in trying to find safe products for my family.
I just followed up to find out exactly what the Munchkin Deluxe Dishwasher Basket is made of and to specifically inquire about phthalates in addition to BPA.
This is the response I received.

Hello,
It says above the White Hot Safety Spoons contain PVC, but the pdf from Munchkin says they don’t. Do you know if they do or don’t.
Thanks.
Tracy K.
Hi Tracy,
Munchkin’s pdf says that the White Hot Safety Spoons (pictured above) do contain PVC. You may have confused them with the Soft Tip Infant Spoons.
Best,
Alicia
Hello,
This may be slightly off topic but I went to buy a dishwasher today and the racks are made of PVC or nylon. I bought nylon hoping it is safer but the entire dishwasher is also lined with plastic. Does anyone know whether I should be concerned? We aren’t eating out of it but water heated at high temperatures is on the plates that we eat off of and also on the plastic. Please tell me if I am going completely overboard on this.
Love the website,
Johanna
Wow, never thought about the dishwasher! Great question Johanna! I would like to know the answer to this question as well. What good is it to buy all this safe stuff and then wash our dishes and cookware in tainted water?
FYI – I used my food processor a lot for the baby and was greatly dissapointed to find out that all of the major brands I called about are made of polycarbonate!
I just got a great product for my baby’s food that is made of polypropylene and it steams, blends, and warms the food. It’s the Beaba Babycook by Williams Sonoma.
Unfortunately I heard otherwise about the Beaba Babycook. Apparently in the item description, it stated that the basket was made out of polycarbonate (BPA) and when this raised questions, the description miraculously changed from polycarbonate to polypropylene. Here is where I read about it http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/news/?p=120
Sorry to burst any bubbles. I’m still trying to find a food processor w/o all the chemicals….guess I will have to stick to glass in this instance.
I also have a Beaba cook, and I believe that the models made in Europe had the BPA in them, but the ones made for Williams Sonoma are BPA free. My friend works at Williams Sonoma as well, and she verified this for me.
Prior to reading the above article regarding which Munchkin products are BPA free, I had purchased the White Hot feeding spoons because it was stamped 'BPA free'. I suspect Munchkin has since made these spoons BPA free as they have stamped 'BPA free' on the packaging of these spoons ? Would they still contain PVC?
Sounds like the safety spoons should be trashed since they contain PVC even though they are phthalate free…
Does anyone know when Munchkin started phasing BPA out of their products? I have a formula dispenser that has the year “2001″ stamped on the bottom and am wondering if this product was made before they phased BPA out?

Hi Fiona,
I read an article back in Sept. 2009 on Zrecs confirming that the Beaba Babycook is definitely BPA-free, and Williams Sonoma also confirmed that for us too. I called again today to double check and they re-confirmed that the bowl is BPA-free. I guess you’ll just have to go with your gut on this one . . .
