What the Heck is a Silicone Bottle?

Over the last year we’ve witnessed a rapid move away from toxic plastic toward BPA-free plastic and glass bottles with added protective silicone covers.  Well, what would happen if we skipped the glass and went straight for the silicone?

No plastic, no glass, just silicone?  Very interesting.

Can you picture it?  Don’t worry - it eluded me too until I actually held it in my hands at the ABC Kids Expo.

  • The body of the bottle is 100% flexible, heat durable silicone.
  • Because of its flexibility, the silicone body needs a little support.  This is where the BPA-free plastic exo-skeleton comes in - it is placed over the neck and shoulders of the bottle.
  • The bottle collar is also made from plastic and screws onto the firm exo-skeleton just like a normal bottle would.
  • A silicone nipple fits into the bottle ring and a travel cap snaps on just like normal too.  So the only touching the baby’s milk is silicone.

    You got to be kidding me! Silicone is not toxic? What about all those breast implants? What's wrong with GLASS? Go past glass? You need to get your facts straight and provide REALLY safe items for baby and throw out ALL the plastic. Let's not wait until the next generation of damaged babies gets hurt.

    We knew this discussion of silicone baby bottles would be controversial!

    You obviously have a strong inclination against silicone in baby products. Please provide us with the basis for your opinion. We would also be interested in hearing your thoughts on the use of silicone nipples and pacifiers too.

    By the way, there is nothing wrong with glass or non-toxic plastic our opinion. We love our Siliskin bottles! Do keep in mind that this is simply a discussion of new possibilities in the world of BPA, PVC and Phthalate free options. That's what we do around here :)

  • Wow, very interesting. Almost makes me want to have another just to try them out. I'm especially liking the Nuby Soft Flex nipple and that spoon upgrade looks so neat. I'm guessing that we're going to be bypassing the bottle altogether this time considering that my baby is 7 mo. I'm also guessing that she wouldn't have taken to it too well considering the pacifier was a no go.

    This is very interesting! I am pregnant and my baby is due in January so I am deep in search of safe bottles. (This is how I found your blog, thanks to Google.)
    I used to be a nurse too (in France) and already have 2 kids 7 and 5. My son (5) is autistic and I am convinced environmental factors play a big part with autism.

    Hi,
    I am always looking for BPA free bottle alternatives and was very excited when I saw the Nuby silicon bottle at my local Sears (Ontario Canada). They are aesthetically appeailing - and the air vent features look like they would be great for gassy babies...I hope more places stock them soon as I find Sears overprices everything. I have purchased the spoon attachment but we have yet to try it. The 4/5 oz bottle also comes with a really neat formula travel pack that fits right inside the lid of the bottle....I'm becoming a BIG nuby fan...very parent friendly items!!

    I think I understand what Peggy is trying to say and to an extent I do feel the same way. With all the products on the market there seems to be the obvious safe choice which would be glass bottles.

    For years people used plastic bottles until the whole BPA thing came out 4-5 years ago. At that time, the ONLY glass bottles on the market were the evenflo ones. I know because I tossed out ALL my plastic and bought those for my at the time 4 month old daughter.

    The thing, I think she is trying to get at and I feel the same way, that is sure this is the next "safe" thing, but for how long? When do we find out that maybe the "safe silicone" was not so safe at all. Whereas with glass bottles, glass is glass. You KNOW there is nothing toxic in it.

    I do recall, it is is correct the problem with the breast implants was not the silicone itself, or it might have been a bad grade of it.. the issue was the fluid leaking out into the breast. So they were replaced.

    Silicone itself I do not find to be too bad, like I prefer the silicone nipples over the latex ones. So I used those, but with my glass bottles.

    I did see the new NUBY soft pacifiers today in the store and they were eye catching. I used the SOOTHIE brand one piece paci with my daughter and so I bought those with my soon to be in June. But I *may* get one of the NUBY ones because I like the way they are designed, meaning the stretch they have to them similar to nursing.

    That is my input...

    If you really want to investigate you might find that glass is actually a compound made predominantly of ..... you guessed it silica, which is basically silicone. Silicone is silica and oxygen. If you want further info just heck out how they make silicone and how they make glass - google it

    Drop-Guard has come out with a product that completely covers the glass baby bottle and see thru. i bought 3 of them and love it. I haven't broken one so i can't tell you that but i don't have to switch it from bottle to bottle it is part of the bottle which i knew i would do.

    I've seen the Drop-Guard cover and it is the strangest, homely looking product. I can't imagine how it would do much to prevent a bottle from breaking, although it may keep it from bursting into shards. I guess I'd have to see it myself to believe it.

    The Nuby Natural Touch is great. I've purchased every bottle on the market and my daughter fought them all. One nipple was too slow, then too fast, or too wide. Ugh! So frustrating! At 5 months we found a bottle that really works. I suggest the slow flow nipple because medium is way too fast. I am looking forward to trying the feeding spoon. All babies are different and not every baby will take to this bottle, but it's worth a try.

    We finally got our hands on one for the first time last week and have to say, it is a very high quality bottle with an amazing venting system and nipple design. The way the silicone body joins to the plastic exo-skeleton is downright ingenious!

    The bottles will finally be available at The Soft Landing in the next 2-3 weeks, so keep your eyes peeled!
