Important Information About Sassy Feeding Products

10/1/08 – UPDATED Information on this situation here.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SASSY FEEDING PRODUCTS

Two days ago, we at The Soft Landing were surprised and disappointed to learn that several baby feeding products manufactured by Sassy may contain BPA. Upon receiving the first information of a possible problem, we immediately suspended sales of all Sassy products on our website while we investigated. Sassy has now confirmed that they had been wrong when they previously assured us – through their Quality Control department, in whom we had developed trust as a reliable source for such information – that these products were BPA-free.

We want you to know the facts as soon as we do. Here is what Sassy has told us. The following products, made by Sassy, do contain BPA:

  • Extra Gentle Soft Tip Spoon – BPA in spoon handle
  • EZ Grip Feeding Bowl and Color Change Spoon – BPA in spoon
  • Snack Time Infa-Trainer Cup – BPA in cap over straw
  • Flexi Grip Toddler Fork and Spoon
  • Color Change Fork and Spoon

We have sold these products through our website. Some were sold individually, and some were sold in packages with other products. Please know we are very disappointed to have received this information from Sassy. We are insisting that Sassy provide us with an explanation for why their initial assurances about these products were wrong, and, if we are not confident in the reliability of Sassy’s information from this point forward, we will not offer their products.

We have encouraged Sassy to conduct a manufacturer’s recall of these products. We do not yet know if they will do that. In the meantime, and regardless of what Sassy decides we at the Soft Landing will gladly make exchanges or issue store credits for any of our customers who bought these products from us. If you bought any of the above products from us, all you need to do is contact us at sassyrecall@thesoftlanding.com. We will be glad to help you and try to answer any questions that you may have.

*Please note – We were also able to confirm that two other Sassy feeding products NOT sold by The Soft Landing also contain BPA. Color Change Infant Feeding Spoon and Ideal Temp Feeding Spoon.  We’ve updated our BPA Free Sassy Lists here and here to reflect this new information.

UPDATE:  We’ve been asked by our readers to provide images of the Sassy feeding products containing BPA to help ease mass confusion, so here you go!

    Hi Alicia,
I was at Z Rec’s blog earlier today and they had a few other products listed there as well. I have posted their list on my blog to help spread the word. Certianly is dissapointing. I just came across your post and thought I would share.

    Hi Trisha,

Thank you for helping spread the word! We have also updated all of our previously published Sassy product lists include help correct confusion about the other products listed by ZRecs.

We felt that listing all of those products here might cause confusion as to what products The Soft Landing has sold and will be offering store credits for.

    Warmest,

    Alicia

Thank you, Alicia, for always keeping us informed!

thank you for getting this info out to us so quickly, and i just used the bpa spoons at dinner tonight! i’ve already emailed sassy and i thought i’d share what i wrote to help encourage everyone else to contact them, as well.
“I AM VERY DISSAPPOINTED TO FIND THAT YOUR COMPANY HAS MISLEAD US IN BELIEVING THAT YOUR PRODUCTS ARE BPA-FREE! I SWEAR BY YOUR PRODUCTS AND TELL OTHERS TO BUY THEM ALL THE TIME B/C I FELT I COULD TRUST THAT THEY WERE SAFE TO USE. ONE OF YOUR ITEMS THAT “NOW” HAVE BPA THAT I USE IS THE EXTRA GENTLE SOFT TIP SPOON. I WOULD LIKE THEM REPLACED WITH ANOTHER OF YOUR LINE OF SPOONS THAT ACTUALLY IS BPA FREE, OR I WOULD LIKE MY MONEY BACK TO BUY SPOONS FROM ANOTHER COMPANY. I HOPE THAT YOU WILL SERIOUSLY CONSIDER A RECALL OF THESE ITEMS, JUST AS OTHER COMPANIES HAVE DONE WITH THEIR BPA BABY BOTTLES.”

    Hi Alison,

We were so disappointed, as I’m sure so many parents were. We used those feeding items with our babies too :(

You’ve handled the situation perfectly. Parents need to let manufacturers know that how important it is that we be able to trust them.

I’ll tell you what – we certainly appreciate it when companies take it upon themselves to label their products as BPA free. Many companies like Boon and Nuby have already moved in this direction and have created an atmosphere of trust in doing so.

Here’s to changing the world of toxic plastics one step at a time!

Alicia, thanks for posting this info and offering exchanges to your customers. I posted it at Safe Mama, too, so we can help get the word out. I hope Sassy has a good explanation for what happened.

  7. Chandra Hampson says:

Please, if possible, post pictures of the items that were once considered BPA free and now are not. It would really help us identify which products we may have purchased which are now no longer considered safe.

  8. softlanding says:

    Hi Chandra,

That’s a great suggestion! We’ve added images for each of the feeding products in question. It is hard to know which products are which when you only have a written list to look at.

  9. softlanding says:

    Hi Becky,

Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing our post with SafeMama’s readers!

    Sincerely,

    Alicia

    This is a real bummer!
I just got a bunch of this stuff….

  11. Kim says:

Does anyone happen to know if the Sassy toy that comes with the Bebe Pod contains BPA?

  12. cw says:

I did not purchase these spoons from TSL (unfortunately!). The company I purchased them from was not helpful at all, so I contacted Sassy personally by phone – they did not return my email. They will exchange the spoons via mail. Their phone number is 616.243.0767 – ask for complaints dept.

  13. T & I's Mommy says:

I am ticked that the feeding bowl and spoon I purchased thinking was OK is toxic. I contacted them asking for a non-toxic replacement.

I need to know which manufacturer does your company use for baby bottles. Thank you

  18. softlanding says:

    Hi Mara,

We do manufacture Sassy products (we are a retailer of many different brands). Sassy manufacturers their products in China. Read more about that here.

    Best,

    Alicia
