The New York Times enlisted the help of Eric Linxweiler, president of outdoor recreation club the Mountaineers, to test five water bottles on hikes in the Cascade Mountains outside Seattle. Each bottle was equipped with a loop to use with a carabiner, is machine-washable (though one company, SIGG, recommends hand-washing), and “none leaked if screwed down tight,” he said.
The bottles tested included:
- Thermos Intak Bottle 24oz
- Klean Kanteen with Loop Cap 27oz
- Guyot Backpacker 32oz
- SIGG Touch with Screw Top 32oz
- Bilt Vite Stainless Steel Bottle 26oz
The Thermos Intak Bottle turned out to be Eric’s favorite.
Made of rigid BPA and PVC free plastic, the bottle has a rotating meter that can be adjusted to monitor water intake. Mr. Linxweiler said the Intak was his favorite of those tested. “The one-handed top opening is really nice, as is the ability to see how much water is left,” he said. He wished that the raised indentations for nonslip carrying covered the entire bottle.
