Nuby Responds to Incorrect Material Listings in ZRecs Guide

nuby-website-logo

We were recently contacted by confused parents asking why they found so many discrepancies between our Nuby Guide and the ZRecs Guide.  Several of them were also under the impression that the products had been tested for PVC. It’s our understanding that ZRecs does not test products for their guide, but that they communicate with the manufacturers (like we do) to confirm materials used in production.

The Nuby products listings on their website currently include the following statement:

[Taken from the ZRecs Guide 12/19/08] “Nuby has not responded to a ZRecs request for information regarding PVC content in their teethers.

What source did they use to obtain their information other than Nuby themselves or product testing?  Our experience with Nuby is that they’ve always been forthcoming and responsive to all of our questions.  We were surprised and needed an answer so we contacted Nuby yesterday.

Our inquiry was forwarded to a top executive who called today.  He began by explaining that Nuby had indeed responded to ZRecs earlier this year.  He then reiterated that ALL of their baby products are PVC and phthalate-free.   Nuby has requested that the listings be corrected.

The following products are incorrectly listed in the ZRecs Guide as containing PVC:

Pacifiers

  • Brites Orthodontic
  • Brites Pacifier
  • Gel Orthodontic
  • Trends Orthodontic

Teethers

  • Cool-sicles Teether
  • CoolBite Fun Animals
  • CoolBite Teether
  • Funkeys Teething Ring
  • Jiggle Giggle Vibrating Teether
  • Kool Soother
  • Pur IcyBite Traingle
  • Pur IceBite Ring
  • Ring Teether
  • Sea Mate Teether
  • Teething Keys
  • Vibrating CoolBite Teether
  • Zany Zooz

I think you should read the Z Recs guide response to this post. Does Soft Landing have some agenda here?
  • It's very difficult to get true information from these companies... We have a similar list on our babysite for products that are localy available, and not listed on many sites...

In more than one instance, we were told on day one that a product is BPA free... then we start digging, and it usually takes one or two conference calls to the mother company to find out that indeed the whole product is not.

I am not say this is the case here... just saying that I don't trust the companies right off the bat. Some of what we ran into:

Product is discontinued for 2009, so it doesn't show up on the manufacturer's "danger" list... Marketing Dept. tags them as BPA free.

The teat is made of silicone, and because the rest of a pacifier is not "supposed" to go in the mouth, the fact that it's PVC or PC is not taken into account and tagged as BPA free

One company assured us that their polycarbonate bottles are tested BPA free by a reputable lab, but refused to give us access to the test results... Clear Polycarbonate is made from Bisphenol-A...

Nuby may be in the clear, but out of 12 companies contacted for BPA information... not one gave us accurate information. One even went so far as to commit and say that they are supported by the Local Cancer Association. Contacting the Association, they responded that they commented on a specific product but condemned almost every other product the company manufactured/distributed.

I struggle to trust the feedback of the manufacturers... if you dig deep enough, you find a lot of statements to the tune of "ok... there is a BPA content, but it's below the required reporting levels set up by the EUSA or FDA, so we do not list it, and therefor the products are listed as BPA-free"

Greed wins out... Wag the dog.

Come on folks. Aren't we all on the same team here wanting information and safe products for our children? Please don't make this a blog war. Both sites are posting not so nice things about the other. I personally follow both blogs and am disappointed by your behavior. Grow up.
  • Dear K,

I'm not sure why would you ask if there's an agenda here? Now that I have read his blog post, I really don't understand his response to my clarification of information for confused parents who have been asking me for help. I'm not sure why he took it so personally.

    Very sincerely,

    Alicia

I just came from ZRecs to read the awful things you wrote. Where are they?? You sound perfectly rational to me. Now I'm wondering about ZRecs. Too bad he had to get personal about such an important issue . .
  • Dear Carrie,

This information is meant to clear up confusion for the parents who contacted us specifically about the ZRecs Guide. Their's is the only website that was brought to our attention with misinformation, so it wasn't meant to be taken personally.

All we can do is try to uncover the truth. Companies can lie to us and unfortunatly we may never be the wiser. Many of us wanted this information clarified and appreciate what you have done to assist. I dont see any blame being assigned for the mixup. In fact, just the opposite. You were very professional and nonbias. Alicia, I appreciate all you have done for me and my family. Thanks!

Honestly, after reading both blog posts (Soft Landing & ZRecs), it just seems like both of you are trying to get the corner on the market and neither or you are truly concerned about the chemicals in children's products. I'm really disappointed in both, it all seems VERY childish.

    Dearest Alicia

I'm sorry to not have responded to your question regarding agendas in a more timely manner. I was too busy making merry and enjoying the good feelings during this holiday season.

Agenda: A wish (and plan) to implement a particular idea without telling anybody even though people will be affected in a negative way.

I'm surprised you didn't have "nah nah nah nah boo boo, Z Recs makes a mistake" as your headline.

If you would read their post more carefully you would see that they reported all of the information they had at their disposal. I am surprised that you feel you reported the facts impartially.

I'm just saying, if you feel you must correct something that another blog reports, number one, do it with a more professional attitude, and number two, know what you are saying is correct.

    Most sincerely,

    A gentle reader
  • I think that there is nothing wrong with what you wrote Alicia. I don't find it to be in a negative tone but rather just reporting. I am reading comments here at your site and ZRecs and I think that the readers are fueling flames that are cold.

Both of your guides are trusted by me and recommended by Green and Clean Mom. I read both of your sites. I think that you both have a niche you need to fill and protect and there is nothing wrong with that. I also believe that you both have tough jobs trying to deal with companies and be a resource for moms trying to buy safe products.
