The key to achieving long term weight loss is to change your lifestyle and your habits. While fad diets may help you shed weight in the short term, you’ll just end up gaining more weight in the long term, as fad diets are unsustainable.


1. Start your day with a healthy smoothie

Invest in a quality blender and treat yourself to a delicious smoothie for breakfast each day. A smoothie is a great way to consume your daily intake of fruits as they are fast and easy to prepare. Smoothies are also easy to customize. To keep your diet fresh and exciting, why not try out different combinations of fruits each day?

2. Eat smaller meals, more often

Instead of eating three large meals per day, try eating a series of smaller meals throughout the day. Smaller meals such as nuts and yogurt are easier for your body to digest and will supply your body with the carbohydrates and protein it needs to function.

3. Cook more often

Although they are often cheap and convenient, fast food and takeaways are usually laden with unnecessary calories. By cooking for yourself you’ll know exactly what ingredients are going in to your meals. When cooking for yourself make sure to use as many fresh ingredients as you can.
If you’re budget conscious, consider visiting your local fruit and vegetable market as you’ll be able to pick up the fresh ingredients for a fraction of the cost charged by grocery stores.

4. Purchase smaller plates and bowls

Most people will instinctively full up their plates and bowls, no matter what size they are. So consider replacing your plates and bowls with smaller plates and bowls which you can full up, without worrying about consuming unnecessary extra calories. Also consider purchasing blue plates and bowls and science has proven that the color blue is an appetite suppressant.

5. Take your time eating

It takes the average person 20 minutes to feel satisfied after eating a meal. As a result many people over eat as they eat too quickly. Next time you sit down to have a meal eat a small portion of your meal and then wait 20 minutes in order to see whether or not you’re still hungry for a second helping.

6. Keep hydrated

The average person should consume between 7-9 glasses of water each day. In fact many people mistake being dehydrated with being hungry. By cutting out soda and sugar laden fruit juices from your diet you’ll automatically lose weight as both soda and fruit juices are high in sugar.

7. Walk more often

Walking is a great way to lose weight and doesn’t require an expensive gym membership. Every step counts, so if you’re traveling a short distance consider leaving your car at home and walking to your destination instead. If you need a bit of motivation, consider purchasing a cheap pedometer which will track every step you take. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a great goal to work towards.
