Planning the Perfect Proposal
Although some guides will tell you that men should always propose to women, there is really no ‘right’ way to conduct a proposal. If you’re a woman considering proposing to your male partner, go right ahead. If you’re part of a gay or lesbian couple, don’t hesitate to take the initiative and propose. The most important thing is to be sure that you’re ready to spend the rest of your life with your partner. Once you know this, the rest will be easy.
Choosing the Ring
Some couples like to shop for engagement rings together, but if you’re planning the proposal as a surprise, make sure you keep it quiet. Borrow a ring from your partner’s jewellery box as a sizing guide, and pay attention to the colour and style of jewellery that she already wears. There are so many different cuts and styles of engagement ring that shopping for the perfect band may seem like a daunting task. Get familiar with the different shapes and settings available and set a budget before you start browsing. Overspending will not please your partner and may mean that you have less money to spend on the wedding and your new life together.
Choose somewhere that is meaningful to you and your partner, a favourite restaurant, holiday destination or the place where you first kissed. Plan ahead to make sure that nothing gets in the way of your proposal, like bad weather or an event that has made your chosen spot crowded and noisy.
The Proposal Itself
It’s best to avoid proposal ideas that are overly cheesy or have been done many times in films. Don’t go with skywriting, a DJ announcement or a proposal in a crowded space if your partner is shy and quiet. Tailor the proposal to your partner’s personality and keep their comfort in mind at all times. Getting down on one knee is traditional, but only do this after you’ve said your lines. It’s important to prepare what you’re going to say beforehand. The proposal can be quite a tense moment and you don’t want to find yourself blank or speechless. Keep it short and focus on the important points, especially why you want to spend the rest of your life with your partner. In all the excitement, don’t forget to put the ring on her finger and remember that the next few hours will be filled with phone calls and congratulations.
